Alaska oil faces long tanker route via Panama Canal

For two years at least about half of Alaska’s oil will travel by tanker 10,000 miles through the Panama Canal to the Gulf Coast, with some shipments to New Jersey. West Coast refineries lack capacity, demand is inland, and no inland pipeline exists. Tankering adds about $1.50 per barrel and requires smaller ships after canal crossing. Major producers are Standard Oil of Ohio, Exxon, and ARCO, with ARCO the only West Coast refinery capacity.

Macksburg Iowa postmaster Bill Sanders, chair of the National Skillet Throwing Association, vents at scoffers and contemplates moving the event from the 160 population farm town. The second annual meet draws about 100 performers and last year saw Carroll Moore set a 51 foot record with an old fashioned skillet. Sanders laments costs and low income while the town promotes T shirts and a bean feed event as the controversy brews over tradition and potential new skillet styles.
