Charges dropped in beating death case in Omaha
Douglas County attorney dropped first degree murder charges against Homer and Joyce Smith in the death of unemployed worker Donald Hay. Insufficient evidence led to the dismissal in Municipal Court, with the couple in custody since June 6. Hay was found May 19 near a South Omaha stockyards chute and died the next day. Police traced the assault to a robbery attempt and said witnesses were reluctant to come forward. Hay carried less than $100, and investigators noted rumors of a large inheritance awaiting him.
