Hostage siege on Dutch train ends as marines stormed
An extended assault on a Rotterdam Groningen express by South Moluccan gunmen ended after Dutch marines attacked the train and Bavensmilde school. One hostage Ans Monsjou died, six Moluccans were killed, and other hostages were freed. Officials vowed no bitterness, amid potential civil unrest.

Despite rain, the third annual Nebraska Trucker Roadeo at Platte County Agricultural Park went on with 52 competitors. Winners include Lyle Geantroad as overall champion and Graves Truck Lines taking the team title. rookie Harold Bolte earned Rookie of the Year and Alan Janssen won Mechanix Illustrated Best Vehicle. Rain, hail, and funnel clouds swept eastern and central Nebraska as a low pressure system spurred storms. The National Weather Service warned of possible flash flooding along the southern border, with baseball size hail reported near Exeter and damage to vehicles and crops in Osceola area.

In downtown Johannesburg three black attackers used Russian guns and a grenade to strike four white workers at John Orrs department store. Two whites died, another critically wounded. one survivor tackled an attacker until police arrived. A separate Fidelity Guards robbery of $17,250 occurred nearby with no injuries.

Kris Saalfeld of Columbus won the Miss Nebraska National Teen-Ager title at Concordia College Seward during the 6th annual pageant. The 17 year old will receive a 60 day paid trip to Atlanta to compete in the Miss National Teen-Ager Pageant Aug. 19. She also earned the citizenship award and first in the What’s Right About America contest, plus multiple scholarships and a Jamaica trip. James Earl Ray, confessor of the King assassination, was found hiding under leaves in the Cumberland Mountains after a seven hour manhunt. Prison officials said fellow fugitive Donald Ray Caylor, 24, was also arrested in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, nearby nuclear research sites.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark died in his sleep at his son Ramsey Clark's New York City home at age 77. He had served on the Supreme Court for 18 years before retiring in 1987 and was serving on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at the time of his death.
