Strudel effort fuels Clarkson Czech Festival

Three years into the effort the Sts Cyril and Methodius women in Clarkson produce about 200 18 inch strudel for the Czech Festival. Aggie Baumert notes the group now saves two days with a refined system and 37 volunteers help bake in the Bishop Neumann School cafeteria. They rely on airless heat, constant tasting, and a long list of ingredients to craft the traditional recipe for sale at lunch stands during the June 17 18 and 19 festival.

Tax deduction may get the ax

The House Ways and Means Committee narrowly voted 18-17 to end the itemized deduction for state and local gasoline taxes as part of President Carter's energy program. Rep. Gephardt led the amendment, which would lift the federal deduction, with officials saying about a quarter of taxpayers itemize and the change would raise roughly $700 million, though it would not affect the poor.
