James Earl Ray and five other convicts broke from Brushy Mountain in a hail of gunfire. Bloodhounds tracked three escapees with Ray possibly among them as a massive manhunt unfolded in northeast Tennessee near Wartburg and Oak Ridge.

The Army review found ample evidence of distinguished gallantry despite no single act cited.
