SCS begins study on windbreak loss and erosion risk
Washington UPI reports the Soil Conservation Service will study windbreak removals by Great Plains farmers amid soil erosion concerns. Administrator R M Davis says the study will count remaining windbreaks, identify types, and explore why some were torn out in recent years. The GAO noted many planted in the 1930s were removed for large windbreak installations, with counties cited in several states. The study aims to guide Plains soil protection, livestock and home cooling, wildlife cover, and air pollution mitigation.

Nebraska Tax Revenue Faces Shortfall in May
Nebraska Revenue Department figures warn state taxes must reach 60 million this month to meet a 420 million annual target. Tax Commissioner Bill Peters doubts the goal will be met, noting a 16 million shortfall over 11 months and linking the gap to Omaha’s unemployment. He cites sales tax growth but weak wage withholding and says refunds are not a major factor.
