Wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent in May and unemployment edged down to 6.9 percent. Food prices fell 2.3 percent the first drop in nine months, signaling a possible inflation break. Total employment rose for the seventh straight month to 90.4 million with participation at a record 62.2 percent.
President Carter told the House Ways and Means Committee of his energy program costing the most he will send to Congress and urged a partnership to ease the energy crisis. He opened a breakfast in the State Dining Room and addressed how partners can tackle the serious situation amid his push to secure passage of his energy plan. Rosalynn Carter, touring Latin America, called in to say she would avoid details of protests involving 200 demonstrators as he returned.
The United States and Cuba reached a deal to exchange diplomatic interest sections, with about 10 American diplomats to the Swiss Embassy in Havana and 10 Cuban diplomats to the Czech Embassy in Washington. The move follows 16 years without full relations, amid Cuba’s policies and the 1962 embargo.

Alaska and ARCO led firms in a battle over the 800 mile pipeline’s transportation fee to be set by the ICC. ARCO seeks a 6.04 per barrel charge with a 7 percent return, Amerada Hess 6.44, other partners to follow, while Alaska argues the fee yields a 100 percent return and concerns about salvage funding and lifetime estimates. The state would receive a 12.5 percent royalty from wellhead prices after transport deductions, with higher charges shrinking state receipts.
Dutch authorities and South Moluccan gunmen holding hostages on a train agreed on two mediators from the Moluccan community. Government spokesman Willem van Leeuwen said the two potential mediators had not yet accepted. Four moderate Moluccan leaders warned militant youths to back off.
