Creston church converted into a large family home
In Creston a 1915 Presbyterian Church bought at auction for 75 dollars was remodeled into a two story three bedroom house on three floors with 4100 square feet. Gary Blessen Bob Kapels and Dennis Rosenthal led the project with family help totaling about 5000 hours. The steeple removal caused a leak but the group completed five entrances and a basement garage. Plans now favor selling the home as a residence while preserving its church origins in local memory.

Restoring a piano finish and fixing a burn
A reader asks how to clean a gritty old piano finish without removing it and how to repair a cigarette burn without refinishing the entire surface. The answer outlines cleaning with mineral spirits or liquid sandpaper, testing finish type with denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner, then matching and reapplying a finish. For burns, scrape char carefully, apply lacquer solvent, or use plastic wood or shellac sticks to fill deep gouges, finishing to match the original.

Country look for living room layout around fireplace
Newlyweds seek early American country style for a front row living room with a large fireplace. Suggest an L shaped sofa and two chairs flanking the fireplace with a central coffee table, end tables between the chairs and sofa, and lamp tables. Consider a sofa back table, a pair of lounge chairs with ottomans, a game table, and a credenza or bookcase as finances allow. Start with fireplace-centered arrangement.
