Pat Greisen Captures Dual Grand Sheep Titles at Platte County

Pat Greisen of St. Edward FFA in Genoa earned two grand championships in regular sheep events at Platte County Hall, winning market lamb and pen of three, plus the senior division sheep showmanship title. Also earning grand honors were Randy Mueller of Platte Center for Jam Hampshire, with additional names referenced as Cindy.

Girls sweep junior showmanship at Platte County Fair

In livestock showmanship at the Platte County Fair on Thursday at the Columbus Sales Pavilion, junior division winners included Amy Stuthman in beef and Gina Fuehler in sheep, with Ward Bakenhus the lone beef intermediate champion. Blues and purples were awarded across beef dairy and sheep divisions, as the fair reported strong youth participation. Thunderstorms afterwards dropped heavy rain across southeast Nebraska with 2.05 inches at Nebraska City and hail at Hickman, though improving weather was forecast through Saturday.

Platte County Fair brings Country and Western flavor

At Agricultural Park grand stand Tommy Overstreet headlines the Grand Ole Opry show at 8 p.m. today. Toni Ingraham, a rising singer, tops the country-western program at 8 p.m. Sunday. A 6:45 p.m. program kicks off today and Saturday in the upstairs club room. Saturday features tractor and pickup pulling starting at 5 p.m. Exhibits and midway are busy through the weekend with junior divisions swine, dairy, and horse events. A 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at the grandstand is hosted by the Platte County Lutheran Laymen's League with Pastor M. W. Goldhammer. Everyone is welcome.

Common Market backs fast breeder research in energy plan

In Brussels the European Common Market rejected President Carter's plea for a moratorium and approved fast breeder reactor research for the 1990s. The Executive Commission urged close cooperation on waste disposal for breeder and existing reactors as part of a safety aligned program. Carter urged a two year pause to study proliferation risks and energy needs.

Oil completes Alaskan trip to Valdez port

Oil from the North Slope reached Valdez at 4 02 pm EDT after an 800 mile run from Prudhoe Bay. The line halted six times during the three day journey, one life was lost and a $20 million pump building was damaged. Storage tanks began filling and preparation for tanker loading continued as Alyeska officials praised the smooth arrival amidst local celebration.

Fair Program Highlights Full Schedule for Saturday

The fair showcases flap raising at 7 a m with light horse judging at Worse Arena 8 00 am. 9 30 am hog judging at New Barn followed by 1 30 pm dairy exhibits in Behlen Building. Dale T Thomas rides at the Midway after 1 00 pm. Tractor pulls at 6 00 pm and rides reduced all day. Evening events include flag lowering at 6 00 pm and a style show at 6 45 pm Upstairs Club Room.

Sunny skies follow rain in southeast Nebraska

Sunny skies and warm temperatures returned to Nebraska after thunderstorms in the southeast. A trough of low pressure brought much needed rainfall in the southeast, with Virginia reporting 2 inches and most areas around 1 inch.
