Jam saves Ashland man after traffic crash
Ashland 26 year old Jim Alexander was in a fog accident when his car rolled off a embankment. He crawled to the roadside where an off duty forest service worker found him and took him to Ashland Community Hospital. Jam jars in his car fooled medics as the odor came from strawberry jam, not blood. He escaped serious injury.

Man Drowns in Ord Gravel Pit
Authorities identified Dan Augustine, 49, an employee of Ulrich Gravel Company, as the man who drowned Monday in a gravel pit about six miles southwest of Ord. Augustine's body was recovered around 7 p.m. and will be sent to Kearney for an autopsy.

Exon names Nelson Nebraska insurance director amid Platte dispute
Gov. J. James Exon announced E. Benjamin Nelson of Omaha will be the state insurance director effective Aug. 15. Nelson, 40, currently heads the Central National Insurance Group counsel staff. Deb Gondringer reports on Mrs. Sheldon born July 1 1946 in Minois who lives with her granddaughter in Columbus after marrying Clarence Sheldon in 1901. A mother of four, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 22, she remains an avid quilter, church member, and long time community volunteer honored by family and a Ford presidential birthday note.
