Orville F. Jones a 25 year veteran of the U S Department of Agriculture's soil conservation service has been appointed to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization staff. Jones will build a worldwide soil degradation monitoring system and inventory with initial work in Africa. He will head a small staff in Rome after transfer from Norfolk Nebraska where he served as SCS area conservationist. Jones a 1543 graduate of the University of Nebraska has worked in Creighton Franklin Hastings and Beatrice and was born in Osceola.
Genoa Nebraska April event features the Royal Riders Saddle Club joining over 50 clubs on routes across Nebraska ending in Milford April 2. They will support Bicentennial activities at Genoa historic sites and record Indian sites trading post Mormon Trail and old fort. Proceeds go to Camp Kiwanis Milford. Shelby DeVon Woodland, vice president of the National Farmers Organization, will address the Polk County convention. The event takes place Saturday at 6 30 pm in the Osceola High School auditorium. Woodland hails from Blackfoot Idaho where his family runs a HQ acre irrigated farm producing cattle sheep milk row crops hay grains and potatoes.
Police in Belfast say Protestant extremists carried out bombings at two Roman Catholic bars killing one patron and injuring 26. The blasts followed the IRA cease-fire and were meant to provoke retaliation. A Catholic construction worker was shot earlier, signaling internal IRA factional tensions. The Hailway Bar and Starry Plough tavern blasts wounded and trapped patrons, including a grandmother blinded in both eyes.
The Marion Tate fishing trawler 60 miles east-southeast of Cape Henry reported a live World War II depth charge in its nets. Coast Guard cutters towed the ship to the Yorktown Weapons Station for safe disarming after crewmen could not lift the device.
UPI reports 14 year old Heidi Biggs, dying of cancer, was hospitalized in Honolulu for lung problems after a Hawaii trip funded by a Canarian businessman. Despite weighing only 4 pounds, she had swum, ridden horses, shopped, and cherished time with her stepfather Randy Hillman. Her condition was deemed irreversible. The visit was arranged as Heidi feared hospitalization, and her transfer followed a doctor’s recommendation. Her mother, Lucille, and the family had hoped for a final Hawaiian vacation before she died.
