The Albion War Mothers held a cooperative Christmas dinner at Harmony Home Recreational Center. Ten members and one guest attended as Mazel Coakes hosted. December birthday honorees were Mrs. Fred Spiegal and Mrs. Coakes.
The Justice Department studies replacing criminal penalties with civil fines for small pot offenses. DEA head John Bartels says the shift could curb jail time and records for youths while keeping deterrence. The review follows rising personal possession arrests and mixed White House signals, with no expected policy change yet. Rhubarb is noted as a medicine for jaundice in parts of the world.
State Senator Ernest Chambers seeks to block Joseph Vitek's confirmation as director of Correctional Services unless Warden Hubert Parratt and Education Director Edith Whiting are removed. Whiting resigned effective July 17 1975, though Chambers says she will stay on payroll until July. Chambers accuses Whiting of lying to a Judiciary Committee and criticizes her autocratic style. Parratt allegedly received waivers to fill the warden post. A special Judiciary Committee meeting was planned before the January 8 legislative session.
