The Nebraska State Board of Education approved a 138.4 million dollar budget for 1977 78 including 13.6 million for operations and 124.7 million for state aid to local schools. The plan calls for 15 million more direct aid and 3.2 million more for special education.
Kansas City UPI reports Ford’s chief delegate hunter James Baker says Ford has 1 135 first ballot votes, five above the nomination threshold. He breaks down state support and notes Mississippi uncommitted bloc. Reagan sits at 1 031 with 93 uncommitted.
Showers and thunderstorms tracked through central and northeast Nebraska with lightning hail and cooler air expected tonight. Highs ranged 78 to 96 across Chadron Beatrice and Beatrice while lows dipped to 51 to 68. A cold front stretched from Montana through Wisconsin and drier air should reduce heat danger by Saturday.
In Chalmette Louisiana a 207 foot five story refinery tower at Tenneco Oil Refinery exploded with a deadly blast. Twelve workers died and seven were injured as debris and fire trapped personnel. Rescue crews worked through the night pulling bodies and treating survivors.
Five people died in Nebraska traffic incidents across the state. A Lincoln woman, Chris Tensen, 18, died after a single vehicle crash near Lincoln. In the Kearney area, three men died when two pickups collided north of town, including Byron L Whitlock and brothers Lyle A Burton and Melvin Burton. A Colorado man, Thomas Quinn, 27, was killed when his truck rear-ended a fuel tank truck six miles east of Ogallala. Richard Rohrbouck, driver of the fuel truck, escaped with injuries.
Heavy rains in Ralston force postponement of the Class A American Legion Junior first round tournament games scheduled for this afternoon and tonight. The entire junior lineup moves back one day while the midget division games shift about 12 hours with Columbus Blues vs Millard set around 7 p.m. in Papillion and the juniors facing Omaha Westside Roberts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Radio KFAB will relay new times if rain delays occur.
Kansas City profile of Arthur Bryant's restaurant as Calvin Trillin hails it as the best in the world.
