Back to Back Declines in July Food and WPI Drops

Washington reports a July 4.0 percent fall in wholesale prices marking back-to-back monthly declines for the first time in two and a half years. Farm prices fell for the third straight month with processed foods easing and declines in poultry, raw cotton, grains, tea, roasted coffee, and dairy products driving the drop. Industrial commodities such as metals, lumber, textiles, and machinery added to the trend, though fuels and transportation equipment softened the gains.

Vance briefs Arabs after Mideast peace mission

Secretary of State Cyrus Vance completed a one day three nation swing briefing Arab leaders on talks with Israeli officials. In Amman he met King Hussein who said he was pleased and encouraged by what he heard before Vance proceeded to Damascus for two hours with President Hafez Assad then to Alexandria to brief President Anwar Sadat on a marathon day ending in London.

Missouri River Basin seeks 450000 study on central Nebraska water needs

Officials from the Missouri River Basin Commission propose a 450000 study to map water needs for wildlife and other uses across 29 Nebraska counties, 20 Colorado counties, and 11 Wyoming counties. The effort includes ecology, habitat preservation, and Platte Basin planning with a 1980 completion target.

Man charged as Son of Sam in New York killings

24 year old postal worker David Berkowitz was charged as the Son of Sam, ending a year long manhunt for a killer who murdered six people and wounded seven in New York City and Long Island. He was arrested near his Yonkers home with a .44 caliber revolver and a planned assault weapon in his car. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail for psychiatric evaluation.

Columbus coed builds 10 foot totem pole for McClusky

Sue Carter, 21, designed and carved an owl topped totem from a cottonwood tree for Bob McClusky. Working six hours weekly June to August, she completed it by Aug 10 at about 80 to 90 hours and $100 in supplies. The project cost McClusky $500. Carter plans no business.

Unseasonably Cold Nebraska Weather Ties To High Pressure

A high pressure system brought unseasonably cold weather to western Nebraska Wednesday night and Thursday with warmer temps expected Friday as the system moves east into Iowa. North Platte tied lows near 39 with high 63 to 70s statewide, while rain was reported in several counties and a weekend shower chance forecast amid partly cloudy skies.
