Japan Bows to Extremist Demands Over Embassy Siege

In Kuala Lumpur the Japanese government said it would meet the demands of the Japanese Red Army after they seized the U S Embassy compound, held 40 to 50 people including five Americans, and threatened fatal harm. The group seeks release of seven Red Army members and a JAL DC8 flight to a country of their choice, with Tokyo coordinating with Malaysia on the crisis.

Crash Kills Harlingen Family Bound for Osceola

A Harlingen Texas family en route to Osceola Nebraska for a visit was killed in a light airplane crash north of Johnson City Texas. Victims: G James Trues s 44 Margie 42 James 19 Cynthia 16. Pilot James Inness perished after the Gesemy 182 left Saturday amid a favorable FAA weather report. Wreckage found near Round Mountain Sunday. Six hurt in collision of pickup and parked car

Six persons injured in a crash between a pickup and a parked car near Creston. Darrell Becher, wife Angeline, and three children were treated at Community Hospital for hip, shoulder, head, and abdominal injuries. The parked car occupants Michael Leves and John Anderson sustained injuries. Another car struck a cow nearby in a separate incident. Total damage listed from multiple accidents in the area.

Discover Columbus Days planning meeting updates

A planning group will meet Wednesday night to brainstorm the Discover Columbus Days celebration in mid October. Led by chairman John Whitehead, representatives from various organizations will gather at 7 p.m. in Equitable Savings & Loan community room to discuss a parade carnival dances coronation bell music senior recognition horse shows bike races and other proposals.

Albion man held in Colfax jail

Kenneth Schmitz of Albion is jailed in Colfax on burglary and marijuana possession charges tied to a Richland area break in. He surrendered after a warrant was issued and faces a $5,000 bond. Also in county jail nearby is Jim D. Eekles of Columbus on the same charge. Several Schuyler men, Robert Ryder Ronald Benham and Matthew Birkel, were charged with marijuana possession and released on their own recognizance, all tied to North Villa Apartments in Schuyler.

Weather warms as Nebraska sees 90s return

Pleasant weather across Nebraska gave way to temperatures climbing back into the 90s. Skies were torn clear to partly cloudy through Tuesday with highs ranging from the 80s to the 90s and nights cooling into the 50s to 60s. Winds were light as a weak cold front and a slow-moving low pressure center drifted eastward through Minnesota and central Nebraska.

University of Nebraska extension veterinarian warns of premature high incidence of sleeping sickness spread by mosquitoes. Dr Charles W Francis notes rising cases in southwestern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas, mostly horses under one year old. Vaccination could head off an epidemic if horses are healthy.
