Six car pileup near Columbus linked to smoke on highway
A dense smoke haze on a highway near Cornhusker Public Power and the Richard Blaser farm caused a six car crash. Two drivers were injured, including Charles Stevenson of Norfolk with $1,700 in damages and an injured camper. James McGuane of Platte Center reported a forearm injury and remained at the scene. One driver, Herbert Luchsinger, was admitted after a head and chest injury. Firefighters battled the blaze for 20 minutes as visibility dropped to about 100 feet. the fire started in a windrow on the Blaser farm. The crash remains under investigation.

Moisture in Columbus during the first seven months of 1975 totaled 20.21 inches, over three inches above the 16.68 inch norm. June and April contributed 6.73 and 4.74 inches respectively, while July brought about 4.6 inches. A dry spell of 19 days preceded July and a 10 day stretch followed, with 2.54 inches falling July 18 to 22. Temperatures averaged near normal, with a mean of 76.2, high of 87.2, and low of 66.2. No 100 degree reading was recorded this summer.

Local Cyclists Reluctant to Embrace Helmet Law
Deb Gondringer reports that on August 24 a motorcycle helmet law will require all riders to wear head protection while moving. The law, LBS78, sets standards from ANSI and Snell or FMVSS, with a fine of 10 to 100 dollars on conviction. Retailers in Columbus saw little to no sales uptick, with most shops having helmets in stock as before.
