UPI reports the July unemployment rate fell 0.2 points to 8.4 percent with 630000 jobs added, extending a seven month trend. Teenagers and women show notable gains while strikes reduced overall improvement. June jobless rate 8.6 percent.
A Columbus restraining order request to stop garbage dumping at the Loup River landfill was denied by Judge Robert Moran in district court. An injunction hearing is set for Aug 15 as the city faces daily fines and possible civil action if the DEC Pressure to close the site persists.
Visalia Calif A Syegvald boy Grant Jason McClang filed suit Thursday through grandmother Oneita Talbot for unspecified damages in the death of his father Jack Edwin McClung in a one car crash on July 2 19 4 The suit alleges a party at Elliott Cobb residence and that the boy s mother Mrs McClung urged drinks and let him drive home intoxicated.
Police probe James Hoffa missing after an alleged meeting with a Detroit Mafia leader Anthony Giacalone. Hoffa's abandoned car found near Bloomfield Hills as authorities pursue leads amid fears of foul play and rival violence within the Teamsters. The governor and prosecutors call for answers while FBI says no jurisdiction yet. Hoffa’s son reported him missing and witnesses placed him at the restaurant briefly Wednesday afternoon.
Police responding to a missing person report found four shot dead in a northwest Washington apartment. Victims were Arthur Holland 72, Mary Louise Brown 62, her adopted daughter Tawnys Monet Smaw 8, and Wilhelmina Adeline Rogers 49. No motive known. Officers said Brown and her daughter had been staying with Holland for three weeks due to a water leak.
President Ford urged the Soviet Union to honor the Helsinki pledge of human rights and called for substantial reductions in East and West bloc forces. He warned that peace requires action not papers and pressed for practical followups, including stalled Central Europe force reductions and nuclear arms limits. Ford noted bipartisan support at the three day security summit and planned further talks with Brezhnev and other leaders.
United Press International reports a slow moving cold front triggered scattered thundershowers across Nebraska on the first day of July. Rain fell heavily in parts of north central Kansas and central Nebraska, with Omaha recording its third driest July on record at 0.44 inches. City figures show Lincoln 1.60 inches for the month, North Platte 2.51 inches, and Grand Island 2.36 inches, all below normal. Temperatures ranged from the 60s to 90s with heat stress warnings for livestock in southeast Nebraska.
Assistant Senate Democratic leader Robert Byrd urged stopping grain sales to the Soviet Union if they harm the U S economy and national interests. He testified at a Senate hearing on inflation from grain sales, citing past deals and urging a pause until mid September or October.
Eu gene R. Yantzie, 24, of Norfolk, was fatally injured about 5:30 p.m. Thursday when his motorcycle collided head on with a pickup truck one mile east of Hadar on Nebraska 13. The truck was driven by Steven C. Grothe, 23, of Hoskins. Yantzie was pronounced dead on arrival at a Norfolk hospital.
