Sgt. Chris Levos of the Columbus Police Department was named Police Officer of 1975 at a Saturday night appreciation banquet sponsored by American Legion Hartman Post 84. About 200 attended as former winners and the Nebraska Department of American Legion provided the main address.
A U.S. Court of Appeals panel rules the FCC may let broadcasters decide what qualifies as bona fide news events for press conferences and debates. The decision allows exemptions from equal time if Congress approves and preserves equal time for debates sponsored by broadcasters unless exempted. The Democratic Committee, Shirley Chisholm, and NOW appealed the ruling.
Two masked gunmen ambushed two guards during a cash pickup at the New Amsterdam Theater on West 42nd Street. The attackers fled without money after firing, while supervisor William Duggan and manager Jack Reby were tied up in the theater. The Getaway was playing as police investigated the ambush.

UPI reports Patricia Hearst is sentenced by Judge Oliver J. Carter to a maximum 35 year term for bank robbery and firearm use, with 90 days of psychiatric study before final sentencing. The judge plans concurrent terms totaling up to 25 years plus 10 for the firearm, and orders further evaluation to consider deferment.

Oscar E. Adkisson, 75, of rural Columbus, died Saturday afternoon while operating a tractor and tandem disc on his farm. An autopsy was ordered in Lincoln to determine the cause of death. Coroner Gayle Tessendorf reported he was found by his wife after the accident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. The tractor dragged him about 30 feet before stalling. No obvious injuries were seen.
