Bus bill fails to get backing in legislature
In Lincoln, a bill to set a formula for contracted school bus capacity failed to gain first round approval. The measure, stripped of district owned buses, faced opposition from Sen. Warner while Sen. Lewis kept a revised proposal alive with a 25-11 adopt vote on his amendment and 26-4 on the formula. Swigart’s bill was laid over after a preliminary vote tally of 25-10 for more debate on April 14.

Grandson of Columbus couple to Vietnam for orphans
Tim Preister, 26, grandson of Mr and Mrs John Preister of Columbus, left Omaha for Saigon to help adopt Vietnamese orphans. He plans to stay over a week, facing delays in government contacts as he coordinates with Braniff Airways staff and Nebraska reporters. Meanwhile, area shops report 1.34 to 2.68 percent of $674.6 million in sales lost to shoplifting in the Omaha metro, with potential losses higher if broader retail categories are counted. Local family efforts to adopt through Omaha agencies continue, as visas remain the final hurdle for several would‑be adoptive families.
