Water Temperature Key To Successful Fishing Early Spring
Anglers are urged to consider water temperature as the primary factor in bites. Crappie feed around 55 degrees and spawn near 60 to 65, while most Nebraska fish begin active feeding in the upper 50s. Optimal growth occurs in mid to upper 70s for bass and catfish, with 80s reducing activity and 90s possibly fatal. Temperature readings vary by depth and current, so carry a thermometer and plan for fluctuating conditions. Water in the Platte and Loup valleys rose in March but cooled again to the high 40s after last week’s wind and chill.
