Kecks’ Colfax Legacy Spurs Town’s Historic Revival
Colfax residents recount six generations of the Keck family starting with Jacob Keck Sr who settled Illinoistown in 1850 and ran the Blue Wing Saloon. Two Main Street businesses, a trading post and saloon, survived the 1874 fire, now Madonna’s and Camp 20 coffee shop. Plaques honor the sites built by Keck, who helped develop water works and joined E Clampus Vitus. Neighbors Kathy Keck and Lois Keck Sinclear praise restoration while stressing preservation of Colfax’s history and culture as tourism grows. Nancy Hagman notes the Colfax Area Historical Society’s role and hopes descendant Nicole Keck continues the legacy.
