Fire destroys two Colfax homes in Stevens Fire aftermath
Joy Wheelehan and her family learned their Sawmill Road houses burned to the ground as the Stevens Fire scorched 934 acres near Colfax. They described the scene as Mordor-like after being away in Tahoe. The family hurried back but could not access the property while crews fought the blaze.

Families hit by Stevens Fire plan fund drive Saturday
Helping Out Trust funds are set up for both families who lost homes in the Stevens Fire and a benefit fundraiser is planned for Saturday. The Wheelehans lost nearly everything but appreciate Colfax’s help as they plan to rebuild. Their two dogs and a few belongings were retrieved from the fire scene before retreating to the van. Fellow evacuees Galen Goding and Debbie Walker also lost their home on Sawmill Road and were evacuated Monday at 5 pm. Julie Goding recalled the destruction including cars, a boat, and property.

A new weekday commuter bus service links Colfax and downtown Sacramento with routes to Roseville Rocklin Loomis Penryn Auburn Clipper Gap and Colfax. Departures from Colfax at 5 51 a m and 6 21 a m arrive in downtown before 8 a m return trips depart 4 32 p m and 5 15 p m with final Colfax stop after 7 p m. The service offers high backed reclining seats overhead storage and bike spaces to attract drivers from personal cars.

Colfax High School graduate Cs Wheeler, first biologist to locate West Nile Virus in a live bird in California last year, recalls early love of animals and how a Cal Poly ornithology class redirected her toward birds. Now a UC Davis field biologist at Salton Sea, she traps, bands, and tests wild birds to monitor three viruses, with West Nile being most active.

Colfax cleanup committee plans October citywide day
