Fur Prices Drop Hit Indiana Trappers Hard

Indiana fur takers face a weak market with pelts bringing little pay. George N. Mannfeld, superintendent of fisheries and game, cites letters from trappers statewide noting low prices deter hunting. The price slump mirrors other states, likely reducing animal harvest as many trapper activities halt this season.

Fur trade downturn pressures Indiana trappers

The tieup of operations since last May leaves 10 000 skilled workers idle and dealers holding large fur stocks. Prices for mink, muskrat and opossum have plummeted from last year, with mink at 4, muskrats around 40 cents and opossums about 50 cents. Trappers face slim profits this season, prompting many to quit, though conservation aims to aid future fur yields. Mr Mannfeld estimates over a million dollars of fur were taken in Indiana last season.
