Fertilizing Boosts Texas Hay Yields and Quality
Robert Reich reports that moisture supports fertilization for high quality Coastal bermuda hay in Central Texas. Texas A&M Extension Service officials advise 80 to 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre with adequate moisture, noting potential yields of 3.6 tons per acre and crude protein near 9.4 percent, rising to 7 tons and 12.8 percent with higher nitrogen. Phosphorus and potassium should follow soil tests, and harvest intervals of six weeks or less aid protein.
