The Soviet Union announced completion of the world's first commercial sized fast breeder reactor ahead of the United States schedule and eight years before President Nixon's 1980 target. Officials say it can prevent radioactive discharges, produce more fuel than it uses, and help end energy shortages.

Lake Whitney yielded solid catches for sandbass with McBride of McGregor reporting 160 sandies in four days. Others bunched 116 to 64 fish, including blacks with a 6 lb 4 oz and a 4 lb 2 oz catch, while crappie anglers reported 61 fish up to 1 lb 9 oz. Water temperature was 59 degrees with the lake level at 522.47.
Mrs Frances Hatter of Clifton earned second place with her Success and Stewart pecans at the Regional Pecan Show in Irving Texas. Earlier her entries took four first and one third at Coryell County Pecan Show in Gatesville. Stewart Success Burkett Western Schley pecans won firsts and Comanche pecans won third.
