Summer cover crops urged to protect soil across lands
The Bosque Soil and Water Conservation urges land operators to plant cover crops this summer to guard cropland recreation wildlife orchards and small fruit areas. Legumes add nitrogen while grasses and sorghum improve soil organic matter infiltration and aeration. They should yield at least 3000 pounds of dry plant material per acre and be drilled on terraced land with slope of 1 percent or more. The Soil Conservation Service in Meridian offers further help.
