A Bosque and Hill counties group proposes converting the abandoned Katy Railroad Bridge across Lake Whitney into a highway bridge. They met Thursday to plan a presentation for the Texas Highway Commission hearing in Austin Friday.
The Record notes a rare calendar quirk with February 1996 having five Thursdays, the first five February issues since 1940, and a prediction that five in February may not occur again until 1496. It invites readers to clip the column, mentions Bosque Nuggets, weather jokes, and reports a hearing on converting the Katy bridge for motor vehicle traffic across Lake Whitney.
A beef cattle field day will be held March 7 at the Livestock and Forage Research Center in McGregor. Activities run 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. including a tour and talks on low cost proteins for wintering cows with calves on native pasture and crossbreeding. Excess center bred bulls will be offered for sale. all bulls are gain tested for performance and fertility. Center staff will answer questions on research topics.
John Phil Gilliam has purchased the controlling interest in the First National Bank of Valley Mills from Florence Pool and was named president. A Clifton native, he has worked at Citizens National Bank in Waco since 1956 and will see no other officer changes.
The Walnut Springs Lions Club sponsors the Second Annual Rattle Snake Hunt over three days with $200 in prizes for top rattlers. Hunter entry is $2, spectators 50 cents, children under six free, plus educational displays, live snake handling demos, an antique gun show and barbed wire exhibit.
Itasca junior high squads won top honors at the Clifton Tournament edging Clifton A 36-20 in boys and Hamilton 31-25 in girls. Crawford boys and Glen Rose girls claimed consolation titles.
Clifton High School coach Aubrey Roberts expresses optimism for one of the best track seasons in years. He highlights sprint relay strength and teams in 440 880 and mile relays and notes practice meets at home before the Dogwood Relays in Palestine. Public School Week runs March 4–7 with open houses and lunch schedules by grade.
A singing event will be held at Lane's Chapel this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone interested is invited to attend and take part in the program.
The schedule lists 68 Cub track events starting March 2 with Dogwood Relays in Palestine and continuing March 9 Cotton Bowl Relays in Taylor, March 16 Valley Mills, March 23 Gatesville, March 29 Midway, April 5 Leste DOI81 Meet, April 13 Cub Relays regional qualifier for B, 1A, 2A, April 20 Regional Meet, and May 3-4 State Meet.
The final candidate filing date is March 6 for both Clifton school district and city council elections to be held in April. Only Clifford Dyer had filed for re election as alderman by press time. others trustees and incumbents have varying term expirations, with several not yet filed.
Texas Highway Patrolman James Wright asked The Record to publish an appeal to stop tampering with highway signs and reflector posts in the Lake Whitney area. Anyone caught pushing them over will be arrested and prosecuted. The Highway Department replaces or repairs signs promptly but a prank could cause a serious accident before restoration.
In a Wednesday Clifton City Council meeting a new City Police Chief was hired. Jim B. Alexander, 30, of Fort Worth will begin duties March 7. He and his wife have two children. his wife is a Walnut Springs native. Alexander currently works for a private patrol firm in Fort Worth.
Church Women United of Bosque County marks World Day of Prayer on March 1 with two sessions at Meridian Methodist Church at 10 a.m. and Womack United Church of Christ at 2:30 p.m. The focus is Human Responsibility with the theme Bear One Another's Burdens.
