When to prune a tree notes timing by purpose
The guide explains pruning rules for dead wood any time, correctional pruning in spring, fruit and bloom enhancement before blossom set in midsummer, and pruning after bloom to reduce blooms. Fall pruning weakens plants and evergreen cuts should avoid late summer or fall. Dead branches may be removed now.

Planting and pest notes from County Agent Hanson
Fall offers ideal time to plant balled and container grown plants with cool weather and lower water loss. Do not fertilize newly planted trees until spring and avoid planting too deeply. For large ball trees, keep the hole shallow and the ball resting on firm soil. Water and mulch after planting, and pause pruning until late winter. Also watch for lice on livestock and follow the Texas Guide for Controlling External Parasites for sprays and programs. The bulletin is free.
