Sheriff OKs funds for radio upgrade with federal grant
County Board of Commissioners approved 6457 dollars in county funds to meet requirements for a 25828 dollar federal grant from Omnibus Crime Bill Safe Streets Fund administered by Michigan OCJP. Grant covers purchase and one year maintenance of multi frequency radios for the department. Harrison City Police radios will also be upgraded with a 1658 total funds including a 414.50 local contribution. Clare declined to apply.

County Hi Way Toll Now Eight
Clare County reports eight deaths in 1971 car toll with the latest fatalities a Wyandotte man and a Farewell man. Herbert L. Shelton 49 of Wyandotte died when his car collided with Russell Strouse of Carson City on U S 27 near the south Harrison interchange. Witnesses said Shelton drove into the northbound lane and horns warned him as Strouse attempted to pass. Shelton pulled onto the shoulder too late and was killed instantly. Two Strouse passengers were injured but not seriously. The story notes a parallel incident of a man killed Friday morning when his car stalled on the track.

Firemen from Glare's Johnny s on the-spot volunteers doused a blaze at 308 W 7th owned by John O Grady. Faulty attic wiring sparked flames but quick action limited damage to under 100 dollars as Mrs. Mc Nerny of Allen Insurance noted.

Work on the sewer construction runs under four contracts. One contract for nine lift stations is 40 percent complete while the others are 62 76 and 94 percent. Costs are $125 000 under estimates with savings from unnecessary Y connections and laterals and $50 000 saved during construction. Federal and State grants totaling $760 355 may rise from 59 5 percent to 64 percent. Harrison DPW superintendent Ernie Roth says installation contractors list is available at City Hall and applications must be made and installations inspected and approved.
