Clare may get new pool with federal recreation funds

Clare City Commissioners consider applying for federal recreation funds via the Michigan DNR to build a city swimming pool. Engineer Delbert Case would lead the grant effort with his Lansing firm, with fees paid from the grant if approved.

County Board fills two vacancies at October meeting

At the first October session the County Board of Commissioners named Frank Coker to a 3 year Social Services Board post and Joe Dumont to replace Frank Warner on the Public Works Board. The board renewed the Clare County Airport license, moved budget review for October 12, and placed Emergency Act funds in the State Savings Bank. It tabled a 1250 dollar MAC dues payment pending funds and asked Prosecutor Trucks to rule on funding for the Clare County Humane Society.

Clare Community Youth Organization schedules benefit

The Clare Community Youth Organization formed with church support plans a two part musical benefit on October 16 at Clare High School and a youth center. A 12 member board was elected last Thursday and an organizational meeting is set for October 6 at 8 p.m. at Clare Congregational Church. The Wash Board Company from Waterford will perform 3 to 5 p.m. with Don Newman narrating at 9 30 p.m. Tickets are sold at Point Clare Restaurant Twin Elms Golf Club Clark's Drugs and the Doherty Motor Hotel.

Mark Murton Named Semifinalist in National Merit Program

Clare High School announces senior Mark Murton as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Among 15,000 nationwide, he ranks as a top state scorer from 655,000 testers on the Qualifying Test. Murton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Morton, maintains a 3.5 average and plans to attend Michigan State University.

Clare United Methodist Church Centennial Observance Planned

Clare United Methodist Church marks 100 years since its class meeting in George Boorn’s home. The centennial events span October 8 dinner, October 9 displays and pageant, and October 10 services with addresses by Reverend William E. Wiltse. Local historians Mrs. Donald E. Holbrook Sr. led research. pageant authors include Mrs. Robert Allen and others.

Trio of Lake residents killed in Isabella County crash

Three Birdsall siblings Linda 19 Nancy 23 and Robert 25 of Lake were killed when their car left Brinton Road and hit two trees near Harrison. Affected were Gerald Lowrie 30 and Lorena Birdsall 2, both injured. Police continue to investigate causes and identify drivers.
