County Fair Draws Near Thousand Pupil Attendance

The Clare County fair attracted a large crowd despite rain and cold. Close to a thousand pupils attended with many schools not in session. Exhibits ranged from grain and fruit to livestock and farm labor savers, and county teachers showcased loyal dedication to education. Secretary J Robert Brown guided the event with seasoned leadership.

Clare High School Class of 1928 Graduates Attend Colleges and Nursing Schools

The Clare high school class of 1928 lists graduates at Central State Teachers College Mt Pleasant Michigan State University Ferris Institute Albion Northwestern University and University of Michigan as well as Detroit College of Law and Oberlin College. Nurses training students are at U of M Hospital Butterworth Grand Rapids Owosso and Saginaw institutions.

Three Ladies Plan Overseas Visit From Sheridan

Mrs. M. D. Clute and daughter, plus Miss Iwereede s, and Mrs. Clute of Sheridan, departed Sunday for Detroit to visit relatives. They intend to sail from New York for Birmingham England on Thursday to tour the country and see its landmarks.

Beaverton High Gridmen Fall to Clare in Openers

Beaverton High School football was soundly defeated by Clare by 26 to 0 at Ward's field. Clare scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters while Beaverton managed three first downs all night. The crowd saw strong Beaverton effort with passes and long runs, but Clare’s defense and offense dominated. The Beaverton schedule shows away games at Shepherd Heart Mt. Pleasant and St. Louis with a home clash against Gladwin on October 19.

Hurd Returns to Clare After Western Conference Changes

The Methodist Episcopal conference at Ionia reassigns over 200 pastorates in western Michigan. Rev. W. W. Hurd and Mrs H. W. Hurd assigned to Clare and Farwell. other clergy receive posts in Coleman Rosebush Gladwin Shepherd Leaton Marion Hart Mt. Pleasant Indian Parish and more. Mrs Hurd ordained in a large service with Bishops Warner and Nicholson presiding.

Mary Holbrook and Rogers Barber Shop announce their beauty parlor will be closed October 1 to 6 for a post graduate course in finger waving. The owners say the training will let them provide the latest in this line of work to patrons.

Uniforms Ordered for Clare High School Band

Thirty six uniforms have been ordered by the Clare Chamber of Commerce committee for the Clare high school band. The band organized last spring with George Boyd as instructor and received Chamber support. The group first appeared publicly on Memorial Day and led the parade to the cemetery. A committee has raised 260 dollars with 100 more needed for uniforms. contributions are being sought from local citizens and will be published in The Sentinel.

Handsome Home Grown Peach Display At Local Tree

James Rogers, who planted pits from exceptional Michgan peaches four years ago, reports eighteen peaches from a tree last week. The fruit rivaled the originals in size and quality, with measurements of nine and eight and three quarters inches around and pairs weighing about one pound. The tree thrives in Michigan climate and is expected to yield better crops annually.

City Firemen And Guests Banquet At Hotel Doherty

The Clare Fire Department held its annual get-together at the Hotel Doherty with the department and guests dining in the main room. Fred Smalley won first prize in Hearts, but could not keep the cigars due to lack of a safe deposit box. Business and professional men who aided during the field day were guests of the department.

Karl Gordineer Dies After Long Illness

Karl Gordineer passed away at his parents home on East Sixth Street early Thursday morning after a prolonged illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday forenoon at ten o'clock from the residence with the Masonic fraternity attending in a body. Burial will be in Cherry Grove cemetery. The obituary will appear next week.

Fire Destroys Roof at O Connor House

A chimney origin fire on Wednesday forenoon damaged James O Connor's residence at McEwan street and Wheaton avenue, destroying the main roof and causing about 2500 dollars in losses. The Fire Department acted quickly, the house was built by Oliver Beemer about thirty years ago, and insurance fully covers the damage with repairs to begin soon.

Gasoline Theft Endangers Clare Firemen

The Clare fire department reports at least six gasoline thefts from the fire hall over two years. Despite locking the hall, a thief entered and sapped fuel, leaving tanks nearly empty as the crew rushed to a fire on Wednesday. Chief Wellman and officers seek cooperation to catch the culprit.

Clare Pioneer Sarah Ann Bennett Dies in Ferndale

Sarah Ann Bennett born June 2 1848 in Mt. Carmel Ohio died September 18 1928 at her daughter’s home in Ferndale after a brief illness aged 80 years 3 months 16 days. She lived in Michigan since 1855 and Clare since 1870s with husband Samuel Fine later widowed then John R Petrie. Survived by three daughters Mrs J B Harrison Mrs George Robinson Mrs F F Miller and two sons EE W Fine Claude A Fine ten grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren and many relatives. Funeral at Ferndale and burial at Cherry Grove cemetery conducted by Rev H B Johnson.

Golden wedding anniversary observed in East Lansing

Rev. and Mrs. H. R. Johnson attended the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Clarke of East Lansing. The couple, former Groat township residents, were parishioners of the pastor when he served in Beaverton. Twenty three guests dined at Hotel Kerns before returning to Hast Lansing for the ceremony read by Rev. Johnson with the couple’s two year old granddaughter as ring bearer.

Red Cross Appeal for Funds in Clare County

The message urges a Clare county drive to raise 100 for hurricane relief after Florida’s devastation. It requests voluntary contributions through local coordinators Mrs. A. H.
