Twenty two cars of a Chesapeake and Ohio freight derailed near Clare county injuring no one. The 39th car broke a wheel causing a mile of track damage and loss of cargo including flour auto frames and sand. About 150 workers, cranes, and bull dozers cleared the scene with crews lifting cars back onto tracks by Monday.
About thirty attendees at Barnes Town & Country Lounge discuss Lake Shamrock and Mill Pond Development aims. They seek a plan to relieve rising water table threatening basements, including damages to Raymond Leinbach at 509 Forest.
The Sentinel announces earlier deadlines for the next three issues due to mechanical changes and a switch to offset printing. Readers are asked to submit news and features by Tuesday 10 a m and want ads by Tuesday 10 a m with strict noon Monday closing for other ads.
A total of 375 parents attended orientation at Coleman Intermediate School on September 18 19 and 20. Teachers advised parents of first through sixth graders on how to support their children during this year of half day sessions. PTA representatives Mrs Floyd Waildie Mrs Glen Bucholz and Mrs Dean Thering served coffee and cookies each evening.
William Robinette 82 father of Mrs James Wood of Clare died Tuesday at Cadillac where he made his home. Funeral services for him will be held there on Friday of this week.
Clare High Pioneers face a pivotal home game against Ithaca after a 14 0 loss at Michigan Lutheran Seminary. Key miscues and fumbles hurt Clare as Ithaca’s Sparky Kench and Jack Dilts led an 18 0 win over Shepherd, setting the stage for a high stakes Mid Michigan B showdown at 8:00 p m tomorrow.
Farwell High School runs a third year Cadet Teaching program led by Superintendent McLaughlin and Helen Mielke. Twelve cadets from kindergarten to eighth grade gain two learning experiences each day. Cadets rotate monthly to broaden assignments across grades and subjects.
A neighborhood kickoff meeting for Girl Scouting is planned for Wednesday October 3 at 1 00 p m in the Clare Congregational Church Lounge. Mrs James Clapperton Coleman is the neighborhood chairman and will lead, joined by district chair Mrs Ela Hilyard of Mt Pleasant. The neighborhood covers Clare Coleman Farwell and Lake areas.
A letter from Michigan Senator Thomas W. Swigert thanks the people of Clare and local leaders for hospitality during a September 25, 1962 hearing of the Senate Committee on Tourist Industries. The note credits Clare Chamber of Commerce President Joe Johnston and East Michigan Tourist Association officers for aiding the event.
Miss Jean Fitzsimmons of Bay City spoke to local women in Clare to organize the Grey Ladies program at Clare General Hospital. Mrs John Lazzell will conduct orientation sessions on October 2 and 3 at 6 45 pm in the hospital dining room. Mrs Jane Kranik urged attendees to submit applications. Harrison’s Mrs Curtis Morton Sr was present.
Clyde R. Pat Hellinger of 792 Norway Lake retires from Michigan Bell on October 1 ending a 40 year career. He recalls manual methods and overnight trips by bicycle as a repairman. He has medals for his work and first aid and has served with the Red Cross and Clare County Board of Supervisors. A farewell party at Twin Elms sent best wishes.
Clare Public Schools and Farwell Area Schools jointly offer physics and advanced math in Clare for Farwell students. Nine Farwell pupils attend, paying a prorated tuition while Farwell covers transport. Administrators see broader goodwill and potential for wider regional expansion.
Kiwanians gift Tony Wedal a decorated scrapbook recounting his eight day winter solo journey in the snowy wilds last January. The album, decorated by Bob McDaniels, includes press clips and news photos of the stunt. Films of the affair by Kiwanis President Dr. J R Gershon were also shown.
A four year old girl in Clear Lake with her grandmother frightened by a large green frog that crawled into her slacks. The animal became trapped when the cuffs were tucked in her boots and was removed by the grandmother after the girl screamed.
Michigan Consolidated Gas will distribute 3.225 million dollars in refunds to about 900000 customers over six months. The plan, approved by the Public Service Commission, lowers monthly bills by a share of the refund based on the current bill. The first credit appears on September 17 with six monthly credits, and any remaining funds will be settled later.
Two Clare teenagers, John Russell 18 and a 16 year old minor, admitted to smashing windows costing over 760 dollars. They struck Sentinel building, Consumers Power HQ showroom, and Clare County Highway Department garage with rocks and a bottle. Witnesses traced a car tied to the incidents and police secured admissions before noon. Prosecutor issued warrants for Russell on felonious destruction and the minor for possible juvenile court action.
A workman Franklin Schaaf, son in law of the Elmer Godwins, was attacked by angry bees while mowing near the planned hunting lodge site north of Farwell. He was stung repeatedly affecting sight and memory and was rushed to a hospital in serious condition.
