The Clare Chamber of Commerce sent members a September 17 update detailing a General Fund balance of 1357 after expenses for Michigan Week maps and events. It notes fundraising profits, a nominating committee, housing aid for Beaver Tool workers, and plans for a Dawn Patrol at the Clare airport.
The State Highway Department distributes second quarter Motor Vehicle Highway Fund receipts for 1962. Michigan officials experiment with blue and yellow ramp markings on three US 27 interchanges near Mt. Pleasant and Clare to help drivers identify on and off ramps at night. Harold H. Cooper says success could extend color coding to all state freeways and seek national standard adoption.
A general meeting for Grey Ladies is set for Monday evening September 24 at 7 30 in the Clare General Hospital dining room. All interested are invited to attend.
Clare High's Pioneers crushed Gladwin 18 to 0 in the 1962 opener as they extended their winning streak to 10. Jim Perrine and Dan Green led a shifting attack with Skip Kegg and John Russell connecting on a TD pass, while Clare’s line anchored a solid defense and a young backfield.
Morley-Stanwood beat Farwell 20 to 13 in Farwell's first home game September 14. Morley-Stanwood scored first with a touchdown and led at halftime seven to six. Farwell's two touchdowns included a Dewey Barber score and Rodney Rumrill added a late Eagle TD. Spectators enjoyed the Farwell Senion Band and halftime routines led by Linda Schofield.
The Senate Tourist Industry Relations Committee will hold hearings on September 24 at Cheboygan and September 25 at Clare as part of six planned in-state sessions. Committee chair Thomas Schweigert said the tours aim to identify grassroots problems and aid solutions for Michigan's $650 million annual tourist industry, with officials from regional associations and chambers of commerce participating.
Officers of the Congregational Youth Fellowship were elected at the regular Sunday evening meeting. President is to be Donald Hamstreet. Other officers named for the coming year include vice president Terry Cooper, secretary Jane Elden, and treasurer Jim McNeil.
Five Harrison women join other state delegates at the Federation of Womens Clubs convention in Grayling held Tuesday and Wednesday. The Harrison attendees are Mrs Mildred Rauch Mrs Marilyn Miller Mrs Clarabelle Titus Mrs Sally Reidel and Mrs Ivah Bartow.
A group of about 90 Clare seventh graders visiting the Oscoda Air Base last Saturday earned unusual praise from a local gas station restroom owner. He commended their manners and consideration, thanked the drivers, and sent letters to the students, their parents, and the Clare Public Schools. The trip was sponsored by Shriners and supervised by Ray Ruby.
Delegates push a proposed constitution that limits tax assessments to 50 percent of cash value with a 1966 effective date. It retains the 15 mill limit while allowing local fixed millage divisions by county vote and adds owner led long term millage voting. The plan shifts millage planning from county boards to elected property owners and spouses in many cases.
New hours extend total to 34 hours weekly starting September 24. Weekdays run 1 to 5 and 7 to 9, Saturdays 1 to 5, with old 15 hour schedule replaced. Librarian Virginia Richardson notes greater patronage and increased use by young people since opening.

Key ideas urged stricter expense evaluation greater efficiency resisting flashy machinery purchases and relying on farmer managerial skill rather than government programs. The group urged viewing farming as a lifestyle and noted farmers face lower returns than other sectors. Next meeting set at Chester Wallace home.

Farwell High School students elected class officers at first meetings of the year. Freshmen chose Lynn Bartell as president and Doug Allen as vice president. sophomores elected Lynn Laverty as president, Bruce Barber as vice president, Howard Ray as secretary, Helen Hilyard as treasurer. Juniors picked Sharon, Scott, Darrell, Dunkie, Lynn Metliner, and Kathy Coats for officers. Seniors elected Gary Ruckle as president, Astrid Juster as vice president, Fern Dickinson as secretary, and Archie Agile as treasurer. Plans include social and fund-raising projects and the forthcoming homecoming parade, game, and dance.
Clare and Isabella county lawyers spouses hosted a social at the Tobacco River Rod and Gun Club on September 13. Alexander T and Mrs Strange were the hosts. Members enjoyed fishing swimming and outdoor games in a casual gathering.
