Four Injured In Car Accident Near Harrison
A 1936 Chevrolet coach driven by Alfred Townsend, 27, collided with a 1936 Ford dump truck driven by Albert Miller, 61, five miles east of US 27 on Arnold Lake road at 10 35 Friday evening. Earl Townsend, his wife, and Marie Bigelow were treated at Clare Hospital for injuries and released Saturday. Police from the Houghton Lake post investigated the crash.

After two rainless days, the first bear was killed on Wednesday as Warren Williams of Batavia shot the animal after a long chase by bear dogs. Jennie Margaret Sherman Lewis longtime Farwell resident died suddenly at her Farwell home Tuesday morning at age 82. Born in 1864 in Wallacingham Canada she moved to Farwell with her parents at age seven and lived there all her life. She married George W. Lewis in 1881 who died in 1927. Survived by six children and numerous relatives. Funeral held Thurston Funeral Home at 2:00 pm with Rev. Powe officiating. Interment Surrey Township Cemetery Farwell.

Two Injured in County Fair Races at Clare County Fair
At Harrison on Saturday two riders were hurt during races. Leon Crampton of St Johns sustained a fractured skull and jaw injuries after the harness strap dropped and the horse kicked him. Eddie Hubel of Clare was thrown onto a fence and guard rail, suffering a bruised nose and facial scrapes. Both received first aid at the fair ground station and medical care at local hospitals where reported improving. A separate airport incident near Harrison left pilot Marlin D Bell and passenger R B Stromg with minor injuries after a Ercoupe nose impact. they were treated and released.

New US-27 Opens to Muskegon River at Houghton Lake
The State Highway Department reports paving of 4906 miles of the new US-27 from M-55 north to the Muskegon river on the west side of Houghton lake is complete and open to local traffic. Bridgeport Core Sands Co. of Saginaw was contractor for a $263,812.79 contract. Local citizens have long sought the straightening of US-27 at Houghton Lake to shorten the route northward. The new US-27 will rejoin the original highway at Grayling when completed.
