The Pioneers kick off the 1942 season at home against Beaverton High School in a 8:16 p. m. game. Coach Leo Brown relies on a veteran lineup with Dean Mance and Jim Ryan among starters and Bill Case able to return soon. The Clare High School band will perform, season tickets are on sale, and local fans are urged to attend to boost the team.

Mrs Anna Funke Dies After Ill Health in Grant Township
Mrs Anna Funke died at her farm home in Grant township Clare county Michigan after five years of ill health. Born Anna Ponke in Detroit October 21 1887 she married Albert Funke on December 25 1908 and had three children Hart Ralph Ruth. She resided in Arthur township since 1924 and was an active Baptist member before declining health. Survived by sons Earl and Ralph at home and daughter in law Ruth Grogan, a sister and four brothers. Funeral at home Friday 2 PM with Rev Charles Kleinhardt officiating and burial in Surrey township cemetery Farwell. Arrangements by Doherty's Sons.

Clare to Hold City Wide Blackout Tuesday Evening
Commander Conrad Walker announced the first practice blackout for Clare authorized by Sixth Service Command through Michigan Council of Defense. The city will blackout September 22 from 10:00 to 10:30 PM with all traffic halted, lights out, and the public directed to shelters.

County Health Group Meets in Harrison September 9
The Clare County Public Health Committee held its 1942 43 kickoff at Mrs. Henry Gardiner’s Harrison home with ten members. Miss Ina Mary Young outlined the group’s role in supporting the health unit and announced a county wide vaccination drive this fall with early reports showing high vaccination rates for school children. December vaccination dates were set for northern and southern county residents, and a mobile traveling x ray unit will visit in spring. Infant and pre school clinics in Harrison, Marion, and Clare were reviewed. 35 babies were examined in Clare. The next meeting is in Clare on November 4.

W P A Scraps Massive War Material Drive Surges On
W P A collects scrap metal and rubber under a national drive to aid munition plants. By Friday and Saturday September 4 and 5, tons of scrap were gathered opposite the city park and loaded onto dealers trucks. Manuel Sutton reports 100,581 pounds collected by Wednesday morning with two trucks delivering four to six tons daily. Citizens are urged to call for pickup of fencing farm implements stoves sheet metal tires or rubber and will receive a government receipt and payment.

George W Tiedeman Dies at Clare Hospital
George William Tiedeman a Grant township pioneer farmer and veterinarian died at Clare Hospital at 3 00 pm Tuesday after a two year decline. Born December 23 1866 in Mitchell Ontario he moved to Michigan fifty two years ago with his wife Rachel Wild and three children Nelson Nora and Flossie. He was active in Maccabees Grange and Masonic Lodge and served as Grant School district director. He is survived by his wife two daughters and a son and three sisters.
