Food production hits new high on American farms

The United States is projected to record a nine percent rise in 1942 farm output, surpassing all prior years and marking one of the largest year to year gains in history. Yields per acre are up six percent, with crop prospects strong across states, as oil crops and legumes drive expansion despite wartime shortages.

Colonville School Reunion Draws Ninety To Gilson Grove

Former teachers and pupils gathered Saturday beside the Tobacco river in Gilson Grove for a Colonville School reunion. Ninety attendees enjoyed a pulled meal, heard a program led by Doris Empey, and elected Jay Clute president with Ida Gerow treasurer and Mary Davis secretary. A next year meeting was set for same time and place.

Red Cross Meetings Hint September Activities

Clare County Chapter of the Red Cross holds its regular monthly meeting Monday September 14 at 8 00 PM in the Farwell Ladies Library. Material for girls blouses and slips will be ready for distribution. Mrs G Lamb President Greenwood Unit meets September 16 all day at Mrs Hudson Jones home with pot luck lunch and asks members to bring finished and unfinished hospital material.

Suggestions for Mailing Gifts to Service Men

The Sentinel lists mailable items for U S Service members and items that must be sealed, with guidance on perishable and undesirable mail. It urges shipping between October 1 and November 1 and to use 4 shoe box sized packages not exceeding 11 pounds, 18 inches by girth 42 inches, and to check with post offices if unsure.

County Board Controls Permits to Carry Firearms for Dog Training

Conservation rules limit gun use in field training to blank pistol cartridges and only with concealed weapon permits. The county clerk handles applications to the county concealed weapon licensing board, which includes the prosecutor, a State Police rep, and the local police or sheriff. Processing takes several weeks, leaving trainers to rely on roped, collar, and voice commands.

Auld Lang Syne Reunion Highlights Homecoming

The twenty third annual Auld Lang Syne Society gathering was held Saturday at the Farwell school auditorium with about seventy five attendees. Horace Holden of Midland was elected president James Stanley vice president and Minerva Richmond secretary treasurer. The program featured Bernice Stanley singing with Ruth Stanley on piano and praise for J L Littlefield whose efforts shaped local park and school forest.

Tire Dealers Urged to File Quarterly Inventory Reports

All tire dealers in Clare County and surrounding area are urged to file overdue inventory reports for the quarter ending June 30 1942. W A Henderson OPA County Administrator notes only 2640 of Michigans 6800 dealers have submitted by the deadline. Reports must be filed on OPA Form R 17 in duplicate by the fifteenth of the following month with the local board and forwarded to New York City.

Comer Returned To State Prison In Drunken Disturbance

Roland Bus Comer was returned to the State Prison of Southern Michigan at Jackson after a July 8 disturbance in Clare. He was found guilty of malicious destruction of personal property and sentenced to three to four years by Circuit Judge Ray Hart. Prosecutor Donald Holbrook led the case. Comer was defended by Atty. Ray D. Markle. Jack Burns, alias Jessie alias John, was sentenced to four years for forgery after pleading guilty in Circuit Court. Burns had earlier been evaluated at Traverse City State Hospital and found sane.

Local Fishermen Catch Canary Bird on Tobacco River

On the closing day of trout season Rev. John H. Hall and William Gordon fished along the Tobacco River west of Clare. A tame canary with a silver leg band dropped near them, appeared cold and hungry, but adapted to a cage after being fed and warmed.

Clare Red Cross Sewing Unit to Resume Work Thursday

The Clare Red Cross Sewing Unit will restart activities Thursday September 17 at the American Legion Rooms City Hall. Hours are 1 to 4 pm and the group serves Sheridan Grant and Arthur townships. Volunteers are urged to donate sewing machines or funds and to finish naval items like knit turtle neck sweaters and socks for overseas service members.

Mrs Emma Perdue Dies in Clare Michigan

Emma Perdue born August 30 1861 in Lincolnshire England died September 8 1942 at age 81 in Clare Michigan after months of ill health. She passed away at her daughter's home Mrs Will Parks. Funeral services were held at the Clare Church of God with Rev Harry L Cleveland officiating and burial followed in Beaverton cemetery.

Former Farwell Lady Mary Alice Sanborn Spring Dies in Idaho

Mary Alice Sanborn Spring, longtime Meadow Creek store operator and postmaster, died August 30 in Coeur d Alene Idaho after a 16 month illness. Born December 28 1878 in Genesee County Michigan she taught in county schools and raised three children. She served Farwell as The Sentinel correspondent and was active in church school and village affairs lifelong.

War Workers Training Classes Planned Here Wednesday Evening
