Clare County opens the Third War Loan campaign with the Gallants rallying to Back the Attack. Through Monday, sales total 73292 dollars with many firms and townships contributing. Local meetings, quotas, and a push to meet the September daily target are noted as the drive continues.

Elizabeth Susan Kaul born February 4 1869 in Saginaw Michigan. She married Fred L Hess in 1886 and lived in Sheridan township Clare County most of her life. She died September 12 1943 after a heart illness at age 74 with funeral held September 14 at St Johns Evangelical Lutheran Clare.

The Clare Bowling Association elected officers and directors at the Dunlop Cafe. Joe Sproat became president, with Dominic McConnell and Norris Hiden as vice presidents. Directors include Jay Green and Leo Russell. League play starts September 20 with City, Merchants, and local Masons groups. Women’s league also plans six teams and possible two more, meeting Mondays and Thursdays.

Claude Howarth father of Mrs. Jennings Archambault of this city, died at St. Marys Hospital Saginaw from injuries after a fall at a Saginaw ice plant where he worked as an electrical engineer. He fell twenty feet September 1 breaking his shoulder hip and leg and injuring his spine. He would have been sixty four this month. Funeral services were in Detroit at 2 PM Monday and burial was in White Chapel Cemetery Royal Oak. Relatives attending from here included Mr and Mrs Jennings Archambault and family Mrs Goldie Zinser Lyle Waite and Merle Archambault stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
The Rev. Mr. Watson, a pastoral candidate from Reese, attended a church pot luck supper Wednesday. He will lead a special service this Sunday at 5:00 PM followed by a church meeting and vote.
Lear J Doherty of Coleman is the Michigan American Legion candidate for the $1000 Lewis S Rosenstiel award for most useful community service. He leads civilian defense efforts in Coleman and Midland County and promotes War Bond drives and mail service for armed forces members.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed the horse barn and tool shed and two stacks of hay at the John Pfannes farm on Main Siding early Tuesday. The Clare rural truck and neighbors fought the blaze, saving other buildings and livestock. A new corn planter, two plows, hay and grain were lost. livestock escaped. The building was likely insured, but contents were not.
P J Hoffmaster director of conservation said Michigan is allocated rifle and shotgun ammunition by the OPA but release for sale may take 45 days. Shells are warehoused and could miss the Sept 26 duck season and Oct 1 small game opener if not released soon. Hoffmaster may personally press OPA officials to expedite release.
Clare High Pioneer football starts the season at 8 15 against Beaverton High. With six veterans out and a mix of reserves, the team aims to build on last year’s 54 0 opener as Coach Don Richardson leads veterans like Larry Foss Bob Ackerman Tony Burdo and Harold Baker against a solid Beaverton lineup. The squad's plans include a full band appearance and season tickets highlight five home games. Casper the mascot will be spotlighted before a trip to St Louis next week.
Mervale A Perry died at his home in Lansing on Saturday at age 45 after several months of ill health. Born November 15 1902 in Gilmore Township Isabella County Michigan, he married Ruth McGoogan in 1926 and had four sons. Funeral services were held at the Gilmore Church of Ghorst with Rev Mary House officiating. Burial followed in Surrey Township Cemetery, Farwell.
