Wayne State Prof Predicts Strong Coho Salmon Catches
Wayne State University biologist Professor Walter Chavin says chemical treatment of streams feeding Lake Superior has reduced lamprey to under 20 percent of former levels and, with similar efforts on Lake Michigan and Huron, aims to cut lamprey to about 10 percent overall. Coho salmon were planted in 1966 and have grown rapidly, with 850,000 fingerlings released and early runs reported on the Platt, Manistee, and Big Huron rivers. The species is spreading in the Great Lakes as anglers report rising catches and conservationists see hopeful expansion. The St Lawrence Seaway opening allows more saltwater varieties to adapt to fresh water and return to spawn.
