Clare children burned in Flint house fire tragedy

A fire at Reginald White’s Flint home killed seven year old Madeline Smith and left two others critically burned, with three more children sustaining minor burns. Warren Dues, 21, and Clare Smith, 15, were rushed to a hospital in critical condition as the blaze spread from a gasoline stove explosion and torn draperies. Clara and Madeline Smith had been visiting from Clare. funeral for Madeline was held in Flint.

Indications Favor Big Clare County Fair Opening

The Clare County fair opens September 16 at Harrison with doubled livestock stables, running water, repaired buildings, and more parking. 4-H, dairy and beef cattle exhibits will exceed prior years alongside fine produce, fruit, and sheep displays. The horse show promises a hammer of a contest as the event includes races, parades, and school day activities.

Blind Charley Williams Chokes to Death at Infirmary

Charles Williams known as Blind Charley died Sunday at the county infirmary from choking on an apple at noon. Despite aid from Mr and Mrs Hugh Henderson and other efforts he died before a physician arrived. He was 48 and had lived at the infirmary for 31 years. Funeral services were held Monday with interment in the home cemetery.

Brown Corners Social Postponed Ice Cream Drive

The ice cream social postponed is rescheduled for next Wednesday night at the Shumway House. Hot hamburgers and coffee will be served. The Ladies Aid invite friends from Clare and Harrison to make it their drive that evening.

Clare Baptist Church Re-elects Rev. Chas Stroup Pastor

The Clare Baptist church annual meeting shows a unanimous vote to retain Rev. Chas Stroup as pastor for another year after a season of growth. The congregation welcomed his wife Rev. Mary Stroup and reported 91 pastoral calls, 14 new members, 15 conversions, and 14 baptisms along with growing services and visitor attendance.

Car Slams Into Ditch After Tire Blowout Near Clare

Howard Cotton sustained severe bruises when a tire blew out on the highway west of Clare. His car left the road, overturned into a ditch, and he was thrown with enough force to break through the top. He managed to return the auto to the road and drive to Sheridan township.

Clarence Manee Dies at Home Following Long Illness

Clarence Manee died at his son Paul Manee’s home in Wise township after a months long illness. Born April 8 1873 in Hillsdale County Michigan he was 58 years four months and twenty days old. He once ran a Clare County meat market later moving to Mecosta County and then to Wild township last spring. Survived by wife two children Paul and Mrs Marjorie Jerred four grandchildren one sister Florence I Manee and a brother George W of Jackson. Funeral services were held at the home with Rev W W Fluid officiating and burial at Cherry Grove cemetery.

The Clare public school opened the new year with about seventy freshmen enrolling. Supt. G. R. Bogan reports high school enrollment at two hundred thirty, the largest in district history, with kindergarten through eighth grade counts listed and a note that final numbers may shift with late registrations.

Randall School marked its opening as a State Standard School with the largest celebration yet. A morning program featured women’s, boys’ and men’s races, a tug of war won by Lawrence Robinette’s team, and a pie eating contest amid huckleberry pies. Ward Waller Dies After Short Illness in New Orleans

Ward Waller son of Mr and Mrs Hdw H Walter of The Heights died in a New Orleans hospital following a brief arterial illness. He had recently undergone amputation of a limb and had been improving then declined. Mrs Waller traveled from Clare to be with him as the end came. QIL Pumping Station Erected South of Clare

The Vernon field pumping station is being erected four miles south of Clare with the pump in place and buildings to be finished. A pipeline will run to Leaton and on to the Mt. Pleasant area nine miles east, sending oil to Bay City. At Woods well fire damaged the tool house and destroyed tools during early Sunday hours.
