Clare Schools Grow With City Expansion and Fires
The Clare school history chronicles growth from a single white schoolhouse in 1872 to a modern brick structure opened in 1901, rebuilt after a 1900 fire, and again destroyed by a 1921 blaze. It notes district formation, trustee elections, staff appointments, new athletic fields, and murals funded by the Federal Arts Project. The district bonds in 1921 and 1922 funded the latest building, opened 1922 with 450 students and a full program of arts, home economics, and manual training.
