Flint Life-Saving Fire Hero Receives National Honor

Farewell Party Held for Maj. A. W. Roffe at Houghton Lake
A farewell event honored Maj. A. W. Roffe commander of C C C Company 684 at their camp on the lake last Thursday night. About twenty volunteers provided entertainment while Roffe received miniature ambulances and trucks. Dinner rations were presented by Chief Cook Henderson amid a guard of cooks. The program included blackface skit by K G Adams, songs by Moriarity English and Beck, instruments by Culhane England Foster Dickinson and a local orchestra.

Two Clare Residents Survive Rough Vehicle Incidents
Tuesday brought two close calls in Clare as Wm Adams escaped serious injury after his car was struck by a northbound freight near Ann Arbor crossing on U S 10. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and shock, while his car sustained heavy damage. Later, five year old Jack Green was struck by a speeding northbound car on U S 27 but sustained only a bruised heel. The driver left the scene.

About sixty attendees shared a chicken dinner at one o'clock and elected officers for the year, with Charlotte Border as Chairwoman and Henrietta Border as Sec Treasurer. A brief program included foot races, ball throwing, and diamond ball. The oldest member was Mrs. Dorothy Sweet of Midland and the youngest was David BK, infant son of Clare. Guests praised the venue and planned to meet again next year at the same site.

Clare county wheat growers elect officers and plan allotment
At a Clare county meeting last Tuesday evening Robert Kleiner F P Davis of Sheridan township and Joseph Sullivan of Hamilton township were elected directors of the Clare county wheat allotment association. The group will determine how many growers will cooperate with the federal plan to cut wheat acreage and raise prices. The plan is voluntary and aims to reduce surplus while letting cooperators choose how to dispose of their wheat. The 15 percent acreage reduction is based on the past three year average and surplus is expected in the next two years.
