The Rainbow session of the Grand Chapter of Michigan Order of Eastern Star held in Grand Rapids October 14 to 16 drew grand attendance. Greta Masten was feted at a noon luncheon by the Greta Masten Club and later elevated to Grand Conductress. The gathering featured notable officers, installations, and speeches celebrating her service.
Clare County forest fire near Huber's Swamp was contained with minimal damage to about a few acres. Mayor Herbert Randall and his sons battled ragweed and stubble fire until Conservation Officers arrived. the incident followed a dry, windy spell and was deemed well controlled.
The November Farm Journal offers etiquette rules for hunters. Always seek permission before entering land with a gun and respect no trespassing signs. Do not shoot near buildings or livestock, close gates, and climb fences at a post. Avoid fires near farms and pay farmers appropriate respect.

Mrs. Rachael Nunn died at her daughter's home in LaSalle Michigan on Sunday morning October 26. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon October 28 at Rim Grove church. A complete obituary will be published in next week's Sentinel.
Telegraph notice from Marietta Ohio reports W J Bernier formerly of Clare died at 4:00 Monday morning in Marietta. Funeral services to be held there Thursday.
The city opened a gravel pit on the mill site, with high quality concrete and road gravel. The north river hill near the dam yields abundant gravel, partially buried under soil, used for street work at 65 cents per yard now and 2 dollars previously. The resource is ample for long term city needs. Police commendations for efficiency and courtesy spark inquiries about the department.
Roscommon heavies defeat Clare Second Team 18-0 as the Pioneer squad struggles against a larger experienced foe. Roscommon rolls 294 yards to Clare 92, with two failed extra points and a late fourth quarter score. Harl Bellows shines for Clare. Roscommon bands and majorettes perform at halftime.
After a strong showing last year Clare High's debate team trains on the question of federal arbitration for labor disputes in all basic American industries. Anne Bicknell and Margaret Rose Gillespie return from last year's squad alongside new talent. Two teams of two will square off four times this year with the first debate set for Friday November 14. Opponent to be announced by the Michigan Forensic Association.
Retirement of Circuit Judge Ray Hart after 30 years on the Midland Isabella Clare Counties bench will be observed November 5 at the Midland Country Club. The testimonial dinner will feature Chief Justice Leland W. Carr and Joseph Moynihan as speakers with Judge-Elect Donald Holbrook introduced.
The Glen Sanford Chapter of the Order of DeMolay met at the Masonic Temple on October 27 1947 to elect new officers for six months. Officers named include Senior Deacon Don Holbrook Junior Deacon John Sexton Scribe Fred Busche Marshal Bill Campbell Sentinel Glen Howlett Senior Steward Doug Fleiving Junior Steward Jack Stuart Standard Bearer Tom Rodabaugh Chaplain Herb Byers and Preceptors Hiwood Worstell Bob Burgess Bill Barber and Tim Joslin. A follow up meeting was set for November 3 to rehearse degrees and set policies.
Mrs Floyd H. Johnson will sell on Tuesday November 4 1947 a complete line of farm implements stock and feed following sale of her farm. See list on page 18.
De Soto and Plymouth customers can visit Bob's Spies and Service in Clare to service vehicles and purchase parts. The shop advertises expert work on auto repairs with a focus on engines, brakes, and diagnostic services.
A photo features five generations of the Akey family: Frederick Akey of Vernon City, Mrs Malcolm Maitland, Vickie Lynn Mercier and Mrs Clarence Mercier of Flint, and Mrs Sarah Akey of Vernon City. Mrs Akey, born in Thurlow Ontario eighty eight years ago, moved to Vassar and then Vernon Township and has lived nearby sixty years. She and her son Fred have resided in Vernon City since 1919. Mrs Mercier is Maitland’s daughter and Maitland is a Clare High School graduate.
The Clare Townsend Club met Friday at Dover with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Saul in attendance. Thomas Abbott was reelected president with Mrs. C D Harvey as vice president and D W Osborn as secretary and treasurer. A social hour followed and Mrs. Cora Button read two pieces. The group plans to meet November 7 with Mr. and Mrs. CG D Harvey.
Saginaw wholesalers plan a full day tour Tuesday November 4 visiting Clare Freeland Sanford Coleman Clare and other communities with a band caravan. Retailers and their guests will join luncheon at Hotel Doherty in Clare and dinner at Midland Country Club with remarks by Harold Daschner and toastmaster Henry Riefel.
Ruth Belle Beauty Shop will stay open with Mary Lou Wilson of Frabeine City in charge, continuing the shop's operations and services.
Mrs Jessie Gibbs longtime Clare resident dies at home on East Seventh Street after a year long illness. She was born December 13 1882 in Charlotte Michigan and died October 26 1947 in Clare aged 64 years 10 months 13 days. Survived by son Byron granddaughter Louise sister Zella Wildren and three brothers Ernest Krebs Roy and Harp. Funeral services held at Thurston Funeral Home with Rev Leah Gardon officiating and burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Clare plans to reorganize its former American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps disbanded during the war. A meeting to restart will be held at the Legion rooms in Clare City Hall at 8:00 PM on Tuesday November 4. Former members are urged to attend and others interested are invited. Membership is not required to participate.
Wilma Roberts five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Roberts Of City east of Mt Pleasant died in Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt Pleasant Tuesday after suffering burns Monday when her dress caught fire while attempting to toast on a stove. The five Roberts children aged seven to two were present unattended at the home when the accident occurred.
Five men were injured Friday afternoon when a stalled car on US-27 was rear ended by another northbound vehicle. Freeman Mitchell, 45, of Clare was involved. William Kelly, 61, of Harrison suffered serious injuries. Other riders had shock and cuts but no hospital care. The crash was investigated by Clare County Sheriff's officers.
R J Fischer of Pontiac owner of Gibraltar Insulation Co demonstrated a car telephone the first in a business vehicle in the state. The system uses a cowl mounted instrument with green and red indicators to show incoming calls and calls sent when absent from the car. Calls cover a fifty mile radius from Michigan Bell towers being built in Saginaw and Flint. A fleet of Gibraltar trucks will receive similar installations as available.
