Clare's insulated windows division of Wood Parts, Inc. in Cadillac employs forty-three workers producing storm and screen windows and doors. Frames are milled locally, then dried and painted in three coats. The plant makes 400 complete units weekly, with 72 parts per sash and screen, featuring patented side rails and ventilators.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce will host Farmers Night next Tuesday October 31 at 7:00 p.m. in St Cecilia’s Catholic Church parlor. Farmers and local business people plan a varied program with tickets selling to members for themselves and two farmers. The event aims to renew friendships and provide a fine dinner and sociable evening for all attendees.
Claude A Hartman a Clare native and long time Michigan Bell worker is honored for forty years of service in the Clare Houghton and Midland area. He started in 1904 when only three telephones existed and now oversees installation and repair in the Clare exchange. Seventeen employees attended the Dunlop Cafe event with guests from Saginaw Midland and Clare and he received a forty year service pin a pipe rack and tobacco as gifts.
The annual Mission Festival of St John’s Ev Lutheran Church Clare will be held this Sunday October 29 with two services at 10 30 a m and 3 p m The Rev H A Muehl Grass Lake will preach at the morning service and Prof W Franzmann of Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw will speak at the afternoon service The public is invited to attend both services.
The Clare Girl Scouts will be guests at the Congregational Church Sunday morning October 29. Miss Jenny Lind a regional field advisor will speak. The Scouts will present their flag and recite the oath. Mrs Tvah Emery leads the local group.
Mrs. William Haley a Vernon township resident dies at home in Flint after a paralytic stroke. Formerly Elizabeth Pollard she lived in Vernon and Clare before moving to Flint fifteen years ago with her husband. Survived by husband and son Albert of Clare. Solemn Requiem High Mass held at St. Cecilia’s Church. interment at St. Cecilia’s Cemetery.
Golfers enjoyed a sunny afternoon at Twin Elms Course before the annual banquet held at 7:30. President Gallagher was absent delaying his campaign speech as the tournament committee led the meeting and Austin Bates conducted songs while the group reflected on a season of play and thanked William Bowler for course improvements.
Mrs Mary H Howard widow of Nelson Howard and longtime Grant township resident died at Traverse City after a three year illness at age 72 years 5 months 23 days. Funeral services will be held at Doherty Funeral Home Sunday at 2 00 pm with interment in Cherry Grove cemetery.
Casualties reported include August F. Williams of Grant township who received a letter from son Pfc Romaine Williams stating a right arm and left shoulder wound on October 4 in France. Pfc Gordon Bowes of Wise township was wounded October 7 in France.
Fifteen years ago Whites built their first 18 by 50 foot greenhouse. They expanded from outdoor growing to winter glass growing and, outgrowing the old structure, replaced it with a larger iron frame greenhouse. The new building measures 110 feet long and 27 feet wide to produce more flowers and offer fresher, moderately priced blooms.
Five year old William Farrell son of Pvt Edward Farrell of 503 Hemlock street sustained second and third degree burns to both thighs when his clothing caught fire during bonfire play Sunday afternoon. He was taken to Clare Hospital where treatment began and his condition shows some improvement. His mother also received burns on her hands while extinguishing the fire and was treated and released.
The well baby and preschool health clinic, normally held on the last Friday of each month, will not be held in Clare this Friday due to conflicts with Tri County Health Unit activities. Clinics expected to resume in November with announcement forthcoming.
A Harrison area Junior Red Cross group poses with Christmas boxes they packed for children in liberated European countries and others to be liberated before Christmas. The boxes hold puzzles crayons memo books combs hair ribbons toothpaste brushes sewing materials games and more. They invite children to include self addressed envelopes so recipients can reply. The group reports 100 percent enrollment across Clare County schools and is preparing holiday favors for armed forces overseas and soldiers in U S military hospitals.

Community concerns grow as Halloween nears and youth mischief rises, with calls to educate children to curb juvenile delinquency and protect mail delivery.
Ernest Hall sixty one year old Vernon township farmer died at his home three miles south and a half mile east of Clare from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was alive Wednesday evening though in jovial spirits and his wife discovered him dead Thursday morning after hearing two shots. He leaves a bereaved wife and ten children with three sons in the armed services and others at home. The body was taken to Thurs ton Mortuary for funeral arrangements.
Harold and Eugene Wyman of Clare have purchased the North Star Grocery from Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sproat. They will install modern meat market equipment and take over the business on Monday, October 30. Joe Sproat will pause work to cut pulpwood and perform patriotic duties before resuming other plans.
The Citizens State Bank of Clare announces a free chance to win a $100 War Savings Bond with no purchase or obligation. Contestants submit a guess for the armistice declaration time, with one entry per person and family entries available at the bank and local businesses. Clare will switch to Central War Time at midnight Sunday October 29 following a council resolution. Most residents set clocks back one hour, schools adjust accordingly, while post office and transit keep Eastern War Time.
