Clare Public School Forms New P T A Meets
About seventy five parents and teachers met Monday in the Clare Public School Peace Economics room for the first Clare P T A meeting. Mrs Wallace Johnson presided. Officers Emil Pfister historian and Royal Akin treasurer were elected. The group planned a November 21 guest speaker Mrs D A Brotherton and a November 15 education institute in Mt Pleasant. Dues set at 50 cents per member with 15 cents for state and national and the rest locally.

Home Economics Clubs and FFA Guests Dine at Clare High
Faculty guests from Home Economics and Future Farmers of America joined Clare High School for a pheasant supper in the Home Ec room. Joe Methner served as toastmaster while members recounted pheasant hunts. Principal Himll Pfister shared a Halloween mystery story. John Cobb and Nancy Lucas sang, Harold Collins played piano, Mrs. Betty Williams led songs, Barbara Longstreet and Norman Wag Zoner spoke on club plans.

Bechtel Dies at Home After Brief Illness
George A. Bechtel of Isabella county died at his Vernon township home Tuesday morning after a brief illness. Born March 20 1889 in Ottawa Ohio he moved to Michigan as a young man and later settled south of Mt Pleasant before moving to Vernon. He leaves his wife Anna Ernest four children and several siblings. Funeral at St Henrys Vernon Friday at 9 30 AM with a Solemn Requiem High Mass and interment in Calvary Cemetery Mt Pleasant.

Plasma drive urged for Clare community physicians
Registrations are being taken for a blood plasma clinic at Clare City Hall from Monday noon October 30 to Friday November 3. The Clare Rebekah Lodge committee urges all, including those with slips from last week, to register on the first page of this Sentinel section and submit to Mrs. Fannie Schultz. Plasma from these clinics supports local blood banks and avoids drawing from armed-forces supplies. Donors must be examined and able to give a pint. no fatty foods four hours prior.

Samuel L. Baker Dies at Lake George After 37 Years in Clare County
Samuel L. Baker, a longtime Clare County resident and pioneer timber worker, died Wednesday October 11, 1944 at his Lake George home. Born September 15, 1856 in Sandusky County Ohio, he lived in Ohio Michigan and Washington during his career. He leaves a brother Frank M. Baker and many nieces and nephews. Services were held October 14 at the Lake George Baptist Church, with interment in Lincoln Township Cemetery. Out of town relatives listed include Carla Baker and several Bakers, Snider, Reed, and Hunt family members.

Good Headlights Campaign Targets Motorists in Michigan
Over 100 police agencies will begin apprehending motorists on October 22, 1944, for defective headlights as part of the State-Wide Pedestrian Protection Emphasis Program started October 15, 1944. One million leaflets and 30,000 posters urged safe headlights to prevent night pedestrian deaths. police will cite out headlights, misdirected beams, or dim lights. The effort also warns daytime caution near pedestrians and includes a second phase for safe walking by pedestrians. The program is sponsored by the Michigan State Safety Commission and the Traffic Safety Association of Detroit with other law enforcement agencies.

Postal Money Order Fees Decreased Under 1944 Act
The Act of September 17 1944 restores pre March 26 1944 money order fees and lowers insured and collect on delivery charges while raising special delivery fees for all mail up to two pounds. Effective November 1 1944. New money order issuing fees vary by amount from six to twenty two cents. Insured mail fees rise from one to twenty five cents across bands. COD fees scale by amount. Special delivery charges differ by class and weight. Some books bound in cloth or paper receive reduced rates.

Greta Masten of Zenobia Chapter Clare was installed as Grand Electa at the seventy-eighth Grand Chapter session in Grand Rapids October 12. Attended by fifty Clare Gladwin Midland District Association members and many friends, she received multiple honors during a three day event and was celebrated with dinners and a large birthday cake.

4-H Club Dines to Close Summer Program at Harrison Church
Eighty four 4-H members leaders and friends gathered at Harrison Congregational Church dining room last Saturday to close the summer program. The evening featured group singing short talks and two conservation films. Lake led with thirty members followed by Carroll Club with twenty five and Randall Mann Siding Doty Davis and Temple clubs also represented. Summer projects covered livestock crops garden canning baking outdoor cooking and tree planting.

Mrs. Charles Durnin of South Kinney Mt Pleasant died October 7 after an eighteen month illness. Born May Elizabeth Williamson September 10 1878 near Findlay Ohio she lived fifty three years in Isabella county active in the Gleaners for forty years. She is survived by her husband Pred Harris a son two grandchildren and a brother. Burial at Riverside Cemetery with Rev C W Mackenzie officiating.
