Closure Aims to Boost Coho Eggs in Huron River Run

The Conservation Department halted fishing October 18 in the Big Huron River and nearby Huron Bay within 1,000 feet to remove angling pressure. The move targets about 1,000,000 coho eggs this fall and transfers of fish to four Upper Peninsula streams, as Platte River operations report 2.5 million eggs collected and daily rates near 900,000.

Area 12 Welcomes New 4-H Youth Agent John Worthington

John Worthington has been named Extension 4-H Youth Agent for Area 12 covering Clare Isabella and Gladwin counties. He transfers from Cass county and will office in Harrison after Mrs Carolyn Bay takes study leave. Worthington brings 11 years in Oakland 4-H and two years in Cass County. he is married with five children.

Coins For UNICEF Doorbell Pitch By Youth Groups

Members of the Congregational and Methodist youth groups will ring door bells on Halloween to collect coins for UNICEF. Residents are asked to have coins ready for officially marked boxes to aid underprivileged children in backward countries through the United Nations project.

Beef Yearlings Command Prices at Clare Feeder Sale

The Clare Livestock Auction hosted a fall feeder sale on Saturday October 21 with strong demand. Beef yearlings sold from 24.00 to 27.00 while heavier Holsteins went 20.00 to 24.00 and light calves 28.00 to 34.00 with irons at 24.50 to 28.00. Holstein steers 350 to 450 pounds brought 16.00 to 22.50 as buyers from Michigan and Indiana attended.

Detroit Junior Livestock Show attracts Clare Isabella youth

Twenty one 4-H members from Clare Isabella area travel to Detroit for the 38th Detroit Junior Livestock Show October 30 to November 2. Exhibitors include Mark Mogg Jeff Bean from Rosebush and multiple Clare county youths showing steers and lambs. The event features a slaughter sale, judging on Wednesday, and an Exhibitors Awards Banquet at the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel.

Conservation District Names Two Directors

The Clare County Soil Conservation District announces its 1967 annual meeting at Farwell High School on a Wednesday evening in November with supper at 7 p.m. A program features Dirk van der Voet, U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service State Soil Scientist, outlining a county soil resource inventory. The board has two vacancies, currently held by William Walter and Paul Huber, with nominations from a committee and floor ballots. All SCC cooperators and interested business representatives are urged to attend.
