Three workers burned in 36 inch main gas line blast near Mt Pleasant

Three pipeline workers from Alabama Tennessee and Louisiana suffered 10 to 18 percent burns as escaping gas ignited when a cleaning pig was retrieved from a 36 inch pipeline four miles east of Mt Pleasant. The explosion sent flames 300 feet high, seen for miles as workers fled to safety. Local residents aided injured men to hospital and delays closed a nearby road while crews shut off gas and mopped up.

Postpone 2 County Road Projects In Clare County

Two Clare county highway projects from the 1967-72 State Highways program have been halted with completion pushed to an uncertain date after 1972 due to funding cuts. One project covers 3.3 miles of US 10 Freeway from M-115 to Old State Road estimated at 4.356 million dollars. The second is a relocation on M-61 from the Osceola county line 3.1 miles to the Muskegon River, listed at 495 thousand dollars.

Clare voters to decide Home Rule November 10

Voters in Clare will go to the polls November 10 to decide the question of Home Rule and a city commission and city manager type of government. Candidates for the proposed charter commission are O D Bayes Frank Haynak Laurence Seiter Theo Wallington Tim Cotter James Olson Arthur Damoth William H Caple and Leo Brown.

First Marking Period Name Honor Roll List

Clare Public School releases the first period honor roll for upper six grades. Eleven students earned all A marks, placing their average at B or better. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen across many names achieved high grades.

Two Injured After Snow Crash At Clare Intersection

Friday morning a snow slick crash at 6th and Pine Clare left Sharla Haring 20 and Dale D Zingery 35 with minor injuries. Both were treated at Clare Osteopathic Hospital after their vehicles veered onto the sidewalk. Sharla Haring was cited for failure to yield by Clare Police.

Michigan Implied Consent Law Takes Effect November 2

A new implied consent law in Michigan requires drivers arrested for DUI to take a chemical test or face automatic license suspension. Drivers may choose a breath test, and may request a second test by a neutral party. Training programs at MSU aim to have breath test operators in every region by November 2.

Missionary To Speak At Clare Congregational Dinner

A family potluck Monday evening will fill the Clare Congregational Church dining room. Rev. Charles Blakney, a missionary with the United Church Board for World Ministries, will speak after the supper. He is noted for linguistics work and advanced evangelism studies.

Pioneers Claim League Title With 19–0 Victory

Clare head coach Gary Rayburn’s Pioneers sealed the US-10 League crown with a 19 to 0 win over Sanford-Meridian. The Green and White, playing on a wet field, ground out yardage as Roger Kushmaul scored all 19 points with three rushing touchdowns and a point after. Archibald Bell’s interception stifled the Meridians’ lone advance, while Larry Crawford and Dan White anchored a strong defense. Continued on Page 8.

Rural Michigan Crash Kills Two Marion Women

Two Marion women, Alice G. Blackledge 63 and her daughter Mary Ann 21, died when their truck skidded off a rain slick Muskegon River bridge on M-115 in Osceola County. A third passenger, Sarah Jean Blackledge 17, was treated for head injuries at Clare General Hospital. A witness reported the vehicle slid from the bridge and flipped into three feet of water before rescuers freed the victims.

Vets Benefits To Be Listed At Harrison Meeting

The Rehabilitation Service, Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a veterans benefits meeting on Wednesday November 15 1967 at VFW Post 1075 Harrison Michigan from 730 to 1000 PM. The session covers federal and state veteran benefits.
