Clare Pioneers Capture Homecoming Gridiron Showdown

Clare High’s Pioneers defeated Blue and Gold Shepherd eleven 26 to 7 in Friday’s Homecoming clash to cement first place in the Mia Michigan Conference. A large crowd attended with an estimated 1987 season-ticket holders plus others. weather was favorable for a weekend of festivities. FB Kinsey led Clare with steady yardage, while Pulcifer Seiter Leiter and Rubin contributed explosively as Clare overcame an early setback caused by a referee's whistle.

Area Cooks Hear Speaker at Clare Workshop

Thirty cooks from Clare and Gladwin county schools gathered October 11 in Clare Public School for the first area Cooks Workshop. Norman Tellar, state instructor for school lunch and milk programs, and Nan Bernstein, state health nutritionist, led sanitation and recipe training. Ronald Sweet discussed food safety, planning, and purchasing. Tellar provided tested recipes, noting new foods should be served four times to gain 80 percent acceptance. A three hour session included a dishwashing demo and a meal prepared by Clare Public School Cooks, with plans to hold periodic classes in each county.

Allan Tulk Attends School Conference at Central Michigan

Allan Tulk, principal of Clare grade school, attended a conference at Central Michigan College on Friday October 14. Sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation, the event aimed to improve teaching with Citizen Education Project as the main topic. Dr Anspach welcomed attendees and Mr Woodward Smith conducted the meeting.

Adults Begin Expanded Clare Public Schools Evening Classes

Clare Public Schools expands adult evening education to two terms starting October 25 with added commercial courses and upgraded instruction. Fall term includes beginner typing and shorthand with advanced options later. driver training and welding remain, plus a fall only show card writing course. Enrollment last year reached 162 and the board aims to broaden coverage and value.

Two Boys Suspects In Lansing Area Housebreakings

Two teenage boys who escaped from a Lansing boys vocational school were arrested and tied to two break-ins north of Clare. Homes at Gerald Mehul residence near Clare and Roy Townsend farm north of the city were entered by window and cellar, with cash and valuables stolen. Police recovered loot after they traced the youths to Traverse City and detainment before a Clare County hearing.

The Clare High School Future Farmers of America chapter initiated twenty two new Greenhands at a regular meeting in the school Ag room. Government Day planning by seniors in Harrison

Shirley Armentrout reports that senior classes in government and sociology will travel to Harrison to assist in planning Government Day set for Monday October 24. Clare Warwell and Harrison seniors will meet Michigan officials to discuss law enforcement roads taxes conservation courts and education and gain insight into officer duties.

High School Hustlers Visit Falls

Sixty members of the High School Hustlers class and their teacher Judge Donald B. Holbrook spent an all day outing on Sunday October 16. They visited Hartwick Pines for a Chapel in the Pines service, then saw the Straits bridge, crossed by ferry to Tahquamenon Falls, had noon at the Lower Falls, visited the Upper Falls and souvenir shop, and entertained themselves during a two hour wait for the boat.

Beaverton Student Suffers 125 Stitch Arm Wound

James Brushaber, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Brushaber, injured when his hand punctured a plate glass door at Beaverton School. He was rushed to Clare General Hospital for treatment, requiring 125 stitches to close the lower arm wounds.

Open House At Clare Public School Draws 150 Attendees

About 150 parents and friends attended the Clare Public School Open House during the Clare PTA meeting. Teachers led tours of divisions and classrooms, with parent visits to students’ rooms. Effie Hales Loyal to Teaching Over Half a Century

Effie Hales a Clare public schools first grade teacher holds a fifty year teaching record. She began with Redner School in Clare County earning 35 dollars a month and walked long distances to reach rural schools in Isabella and Clare counties. Hales taught all eight grades at times, managed fires and chores, coached, and guided holidays while sustaining a lifelong dedication to education.

Replacing City Street Markers In Clare

Clare plans new high visibility street markers within weeks. City manager Lord Wedge ordered over 200 metal name signs to be placed on unmarked streets and to replace old wooden markers. Readable markers were a priority since his arrival two years ago. Officials await a contracting company to lay a new storm sewer line under the Ann Arbor railroad tracks.
