The Clare County United Fund opened with a kickoff breakfast at Hotel Doherty and will run October 27 through November 12. Volunteers target door to door canvassing across Clare County to raise 8959 dollars for local agencies including Red Cross Michigan State Polio Foundation and Community Chest with support from municipal leaders, businesses, and hospitals.

Two youths held for probate hearing in Clare County
A 14 year old boy who helped break into two North Clare homes on October 15 was sent back to Lansing Boys Vocational School in Clare County Probate Court before Judge George Bates. The 15 year old co defendant remains unsettled and a hearing is set for November 9 with Judge Bates asking Judge Rourke Wilmot to preside.

Johnston's Grain Elevator begins a new service to area farmers with a 2.5 ton mixer that sprays liquid Blackstrap molasses into ground feed. A 4,000 gal tank pumps molasses into the feed, replacing dried molasses and allowing metered additions for dairy cows, steers, hogs and chickens. Prices quoted show about half the previous cost to customers.

Farwell man held on steer shooting charge bonds posted
Robert Gamble of Farwell waived preliminary hearing in Municipal court on a charge of shooting a steer in a pasture near Lake. Judge William Dunlop released Gamble on a $300 bond and ordered the case bound over to circuit court. The steer belonged to William Lowrie and was shot last week.

All students in Clare and Farwell Public Schools from grades one through twelve will receive vision testing within two weeks. The Massachusetts Vision Testing Machine was purchased by the two districts, with training provided for operators. After an initial full check this year, only odd-numbered grades will be tested annually to cover all students every two years.
