First Commerce Meeting Enlightens Clare Townspeople
The Clare Chamber of Commerce held its first meeting of the 1935 1936 season at Hotel Doherty. Rev Albert Dawe gave the invocation and high school principal Austin Bates led community singing. Mayor Jess Hampton reported progress on bringing the Northern Michigan Road Commissioners Convention to Clare in 1936, with about 2000 delegates expected. Miles Callaghan urged a road machinery display and a delegation to the State Road commissioners banquet in Lansing. Deputy State Highway Commissioner Harry C. Coons spoke, outlining Michigan road activity and funding, noting 9300 miles of trunk lines and a 20 million dollar state allotment with federal relief funds expected to reach Michigan. President Holbrook closed the meeting thanking all contributors.

Thirteen New Members Added to Local Literature Club
Mrs. Johanna Mack hosted the Clere Good Literature Club meeting despite rain with a large turnout. Doris Gerow was president and welcomed new members Osmunn and Marie Smalley, while Estella Holden presented new books. Gypsies Fined for Pocket Picking in Clare Case
A group of gypsies pleaded guilty to stealing $65 from Cash Bailey of Theo G Bowler. Judge Kyle McKinnon fined them $25 plus costs totaling $121.50 and ordered repayment. They were held to await Brown City authorities after paying the fine. Bailey described the gypsy car and crowd to county officials.

Respected Eagle farmer John Armstrong dies at home
John Armstrong All en, born August 18 1875 in Madoc Ontario, died Monday morning at his Eagle Community home after a long illness. He moved to Clare county in 1881, lived on the Crawford Settlement Dover farm most of his life, married Marie Krell on May 3 1905, and leaves wife, two children Ralph and Elizabeth, four grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and many relatives and friends. The funeral attendance from distance indicates strong community ties.

Clare High School auditorium hosted a district meeting and initiation ceremony for the Future Farmers of America. Clare chapter 110 hosted eight neighboring chapters Beaverton Coleman Farwell Ewart Barryton McBain Mt. Pleasant Reed City with about 200 members and advisors in attendance. Sixty three candidates joined the Green Hand Degree and about forty were raised in the Future Farmer Degree.

The Slentz residence in Vernon Township suffered a rear cornice fire ruin. Fire trucks responded Monday afternoon to control fast spreading flames with no contents damage reported. Loss estimated about 75 dollars as oil men and neighbors helped suppress the blaze before firefighters arrived.

Greenwood Township Carpenter Dies by Own Hand in Jail
Ferrin Rowland, a Greenwood township carpenter and farmer, killed his two stepdaughters and confessed to the slayings before hanging himself in Oakland county jail. The man tied a sheet to a cell bar and died after writing notes dividing his property and desiring burial at Evergreen cemetery Grand Blanc. His wife later confessed they plotted the deaths of the children and the husband of her father Herman Voss, saying they chose to become alone after the killings.
