Clare Chamber of Commerce Holds First Meeting

Sixty members and guests attended the Clare Chamber of Commerce gathering at Phelps Cafeteria after a dinner by Mrs Wora J Barnes. Attorney T Carl Holbrook presided and spoke on spring and winter activities while a paid up membership stood at forty four. A Rural supper plan was discussed and referred to directors. John K Dean gave the evening address. continued on last page.

The October conference led by Wexford county chairman Mr. Knowlton included Mrs. Hachmuth of Clare Miss Johnston nurse Edith Myers Mt. Pleasant and Edith J. Last Rites Held For Mrs. Fred Lamphere

Funeral services were held at the Lamphere home in Wise for Mrs. Fred Lamphere who died in Lansing after months of illness. Rev. A. P. MacDonald officiated. burial followed at Cherry Grove. She was born Jessie Anderson in Clare on September 23 1889 and married Fred Lamphere on November 25 1905. They had three children Vern Theron and Betty and later moved to Lansing. She leaves a large family including her husband three children her mother four sisters two brothers and many relatives and friends.

Funeral for Harry Slater Held Saturday

Friends in Clare mourn the death of Harry Slater born October 12 1901 Wise County. He served in the U S Cavalry before injuries ended his career. He married Coral Robbins and is survived by wife a daughter Donna May his father F W Slater sisters Elmer Tibbets Gladys and brothers Russell Roy. Burial followed at Delwin beside his mother.

Annual Chicken Supper At St. Cecelia Church

Kleman Urges Alfalfa Rise Over Corn or Beans

In Clare Sentinel letters, Kleman argues farmers should plant at least ten acres of alfalfa to boost income. He contends high seed costs pale beside losses from continued idleness and recreation, asserting alfalfa could yield about 250 dollars yearly with proper care while neglect drains wealth and mortgage the farm. He also warns about the banker taking the farm if gas expenses and idle habits persist, urging cleaner barns and livestock care.

Mrs Mulder Reports Michigan State Club Meeting

Mrs. Mulder gave a detailed report on the thirty fourth annual Michigan State Federation of Woman's Clubs meeting at Sault Ste Marie. The Methodist church in Clare votes to keep seven thirty evening service this winter while Epworth League remains at six thirty and church worship at seven thirty, while the region shifts to fast time.

Public Health Work Gets County Boost

The Clare County Board of Supervisors unanimously approves a $500 grant to fund a county nurse for five months. Miss Johnson reports 49 corrected cases from home visits. 40 homes have been visited. A health program covers school inspections, teacher involvement, and remote area outreach ahead of National Health Week starting November 5.

Grant and Vernon townships Isabella county and Clare city officials settled this year’s district tax apportionment. Vernon $1688 Grant $2434 Clare city $31878 were allocated after extended talks and a split-the-difference compromise.

The Clare City Library board met on Thursday October 4 and approved a two hundred dollar plan to buy new books. The library joined the Library Guild of America in June providing a monthly best book pick. The US Daily papers, covering official acts, are underutilized and may be given to the high school on closed days.
